Mengistu Haile Mariam Offers Amnesty To Eritrean Secessionists On Condition They Defect To Ethiopia

In a lengthy speech to the nation on radio and television, Ethiopian leader Lieutenant Colonel Mengistu Haile Mariam has accused what he called the "reactionary ruling classes" of the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Tunisia, Somalia and the Sudan of supporting Eritrean guerrillas in their secessionist war against the Ethiopian central government. Colonel Mengistu claimed that these countries were arming the rebels with military supplies obtained from NATO.
