The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, also known as Zelda no Densetsu: Kamigami no Triforce (ゼルダの伝説 神々のトライフォース Zeruda no Densetsu: Kamigami no Toraifōsu?) in Japan, is an action-adventure video game developed and published by Nintendo for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It is the third game in The Legend of Zelda series, and was released in 1991 in Japan and in 1992 in North America and Europe. The launch was a commercial and critical success, being a milestone for Nintendo and is considered one of the best games of all time, including for its plot,[1] and sold more than four million copies worldwide.[ two]

The plot of A Link to the Past focuses on the hero Link on a journey to save the land of Hyrule, stop Ganon's return and free the seven maidens descended from the ancient sages. The story is a prequel to previous games in the series, involving the ancestors of Link and Princess Zelda. The game uses a 3/4 top-down perspective similar to that of the original The Legend of Zelda, leaving behind the side-scrolling elements of Zelda II: The Adventure of Link. Link to the Past introduced elements to the series that are still commonplace today, such as the concept of an alternate or parallel world, the Master Sword, and other new weapons and items.[citation needed]

It was later released for the Game Boy Advance in 2002 (along with the Capcom-developed title The Legend of Zelda: Four Swords), and was made available for download on the Wii Virtual Console service in early 2007 and on the Wii U in January 2007. 2014.[3] The game was added as part of the Nintendo Switch Online library in 2018. A direct sequel, titled The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds, was released for the Nintendo 3DS in November 2013.[4] The game was directed by Takashi Tezuka, produced by Shigeru Miyamoto, written by Kensuke Tanabe, and the soundtrack was composed by Koji Kondo.
