The Fetterman Massacre was an event that occurred on December 21, 1866, near Fort Phil Kearny in present-day Wyoming, during a conflict known as Red Cloud's War between the United States Army and several Native American tribes. The event was named after Captain William Fetterman, a U.S. Army officer who was in command of a detachment of 80 soldiers.
