Maoist insurgents in the Philippines

The New People’s Army was founded 54 years ago to overthrow Ferdinand Marcos. The NPA is the armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines. It’s goal is to overthrow the Philippine government and establish a socialist state. It once had 25,000 fighters and was a threat to US troops in the Philippines during the cold war.
Their existence was used by President Marcos to justifying his long, and often tyrannical and brutal rule. Marcos was toppled in 1986. The NPA did use tactics like bombings, assassinations, and military style attacks on the military and police forces.
What followed was democracy and economic growth. Suddenly, communist revolution was not as appealing to Filipinos.
The NPA is considered the last internal security threat for the Philippines. It is estimated to have only about 2,000 fighters left. There are on and off peace talks that seemingly go nowhere. It seems like we will see the end of the NPA within our lifetimes.
