At the age of 14, Rema was given his first phone by a member of his church, so he started downloading free beats and rapping over top of them. Unfortunately, just as it seemed like a path of sorts was opening up to him, things began to go horribly wrong. \First, Rema lost his brother to a botched operation due to negligence in the Nigerian healthcare system. A year later, he’d lose his father -- a politician in Nigeria’s People’s Democratic Party -- who was found dead in a hotel room under mysterious circumstances that are still unknown. His family members’ deaths left Rema as the sole breadwinner of his family. Overwhelmed by the moment, Rema ran away from home at the age of 17 and settled in Ghana where he attempted to make a living while furthering his music career.
