Bill of the Day: SB 5019
Iin the 2022 legislative session, democrat lawmakers passed SSHB 1664 to give funding for public schools to have more mental health supports and counselors as part of their "physical, social, and emotional support staff (PSES staff)". We opposed this in the 2022 session. SB 5019 seeks to prohibit schools from using these funds on "non-classified staff" - such as safety resource officers, hall monitors, and other safety personnel. Local school boards & districts should be able to dictate the type of personnel that would best suit the needs of the students in their schools. This is another overreach of the state into local control.
