The major party color schemes, and the terms “red state” and "blue state," are actually a recent phenomenon.

The use of red to represent Republicans and blue to represent Democrats in the United States is a widely recognized convention in American politics. This convention has its roots in the TV networks' coverage of the 2000 presidential election, where red was used to represent states won by Republican candidate George W. Bush and blue was used to represent states won by Democratic candidate Al Gore.

Since then, the association of red with Republicans and blue with Democrats has become firmly established in the public consciousness and is now used by many news organizations, political analysts, and mapping platforms to represent the two major political parties in the United States.
