We Do what we're Told (Milgram's 37) was the closing track to Peter Gabriel's best album, one of the very finest albums in the History of Sound and Truth, his 1986 Masterpiece, So!

This song is about the Social/Psychological experiments of Stanley Milgram, a Yale professor who in 1961 had subjects administer electric shocks to a person if they answered a question wrong - at least, that's what they thought. The person being shocked was actually an actor who writhed in pain and agony, begging for release, as the shocks got larger. Milgram wanted to see if the subjects would administer the shocks when the experimenter told them to, even though they were causing apparent pain in the person. Almost all subjects administered the highest level of shock despite the actor pounding the wall in apparent agony.

"In the main experiment, 63% percent of the participants were prepared to administer enough electricity to injure the person on the other end, which is staggering that anyone would do something like this simply because they were told to, by a perfect stranger, albeit one with a Lab Coat on...at first this seems a very negative thing, but, eventually, I was comforted that some had the strength to rebel against this Authority."

So, what is Milgram's 37? '37' came from the number of subjects who administered the maximum shock to these 'Patients', who were actually Actors, screaming out in Agony and Begging for Release, as part of Dr. Milgram's experiments...37 out of the 40 people who were selected to take part in this Psychological Experiment, followed AUTHORITY, Blindly, and willingly shocked these 'Patients' with the maximum charge, which would have caused severe difficulties, had the shocks been real...again, the Test subjects did NOT know that the Electric Shocks weren't real...
