In "The First Day", the series pilot episode, we meet Leonard Swindley, a bumbling and flustered assistant manager at a large department store. On his first day in the job, he has to deal with a variety of tasks, including dealing with a difficult customer, overseeing the store's inventory and dealing with the store's other employees, including his nemesis, Mr. Humphries. Throughout the episode, Leonard struggles to assert himself and prove to his colleagues that he is capable of doing the job. Despite his many mishaps, he remains determined to make a success of his new position.
