Dr Bright:
-all steroid hormones from cholesterol
[only from animal fat]
-as steroid hormones metabolized...
-body makes cortisol to handle this stress
-send vasomotor [expand blood vessels]
-have hot flash
-liver produces sugar for energy
Fat addresses that by replenishing
the stress response
Study on athletes..
-2 weeks on high fat diet
-2 weeks on high carb diet
-put them in training to the max
[exercise raises cortisol;
puts stress on body]
Result:
-high fat group had lower cortisol
"So, eating fat is an aphrodesiac?
It is energy, really
Question: ways to measure cortisol?
-yes, but not serum, use salivary cortisol measure
Your adrenal cortex produces cortisol...
-starts slowly about 2:00 am
-gradually increases to peak in morning
-if waking early, having cortisol spikes
-then, gently goes down until night
-then, melatonin is produced
"You can't have cortisol & melatonin
at the same time
-it is one or the other"
If cortisol is high at night: wired & tired
-measure: do 4 point salivary cortisol test
"Eating fat helps this smoothing out
of the cortisol at night"
