The French Revolution and Nationalism

The French Revolution (1789-1799) is often seen as the birth of nationalism in Europe. After France revolted against King Louis VXI and the Estates System, Nationalism and other ideas of the revolution spread throughout Europe. After Napoleon's loss at Waterloo, Austrian diplomat Klemens von Metternich quipped that "when France sneezes, Europe catches a cold." Of course, the cold he was referring to here, was Nationalism.
