Super Mario Advance No-Death Playthrough (Game Boy Player Capture)
This is a capture of me playing through Super Mario Advance for the Game Boy Advance. This is not an emulator. This footage was captured directly from my GameCube using my Game Boy Player with progressive scan mode enabled (you'll need the GameCube's component cables to do this and your model of GameCube must support component out as well).
Even though I don't typically buy remakes of games, I purchased Super Mario Advance on the Game Boy Advance launch date in 2001 along with Castlevania: Circle of the Moon. Super Mario Advance had an excellent multiplayer version of the Mario Bros. arcade game that could be played with a single cartridge, plus I never owned Super Mario All-Stars, so I figured this game was worth it.
Super Mario Advance is essentially a modified version the SNES Mario All-Stars remake of Super Mario Bros. 2, but it features some wild additions such as giant enemies and items and a new boss. The game also features additional mushrooms in several levels and obnoxious new voices for all sorts of characters. Nintendo probably decided to use Super Mario Bros. 2 for the first Super Mario Advance game since the company had already re-released the original Super Mario Bros. on the Game Boy Color just two years earlier.
I'm a huge fan of Super Mario Bros. 2, and this remake isn't bad at all (putting aside the annoying voice acting), but I do prefer the original game, which is probably why I've only beaten this game maybe twice before. The visible area on screen is also a little bit limited compared the original game, but nowhere near as bad as Super Mario Bros. Deluxe on the Game Boy Color.
Aside from the new mushrooms in certain levels, Super Mario Advance has new ace coins (the giant red A coins), which function similar to dragon coins in Super Mario World. However, if you collect all of the coins in this game, you'll earn a 100% completion rating on your save file, although there's no meaningful reward for doing so.
For this playthrough I'm completing the entire game in a single session without dying or using any saves while collecting all of the mushroom and ace coins. Enjoy.
Recorded with the Hauppauge HD PVR and the GameCube's component cables at 60 frames per second. I'm using an original model Game Boy Advance as a controller via a GameCube/Game Boy Advance Link Cable.
