9 more reasons modern cars suck – China’s EV push and US automakers

I explain why auto manufacturers are going for EVs, and raise serious questions as to economic viability. This is BIG.

First, I cover serialized components, the kind that are linked to a specific VIN and will not work on another car. This causes serious issues when a specific model is older and out of production. How difficult, or even possible, will it be to use salvage parts? Do you own the car if you can’t even swap out a few parts to keep it rolling? This is one of the big points Louis Rossmann champions in the Right2Repair movement.

Plastics can be cheap or pleasant to the touch. Carbon fiber is now more common, and leather usage is at an all time high, but modern plastics never felt worse. Gone are the days when materials like Bakelite were used.

Wheels also lost their timeless appeal. Modern wheels have weird swirls and angles that just don’t age well compared to the simple spoked design, or turbine design, or even wheel-cover esthetics.
I do go on a bit of a rant with nose height on modern cars. They seem to be higher and higher, even on sports cars and muscle cars. Where are the wedge designs, the low slung noses of not that long ago?

Pedals as well lack any detail, unless in older style cars, and even that as just options. Chrome trim, knurls, dots, striations in durable rubbers that can last decades. Also related to pedals is the 2-pedal vs 3-pedal debate…now unified versus the one pedal driving thing. I have no words, but still win this argument LOL.

Marker lights, buzzers and chimes also have gone the cheap route, losing personality or appeal.

The big talking point of the video is the EV push. One would normally start such a debate from environmental concerns, but evidence will be seen too far in the future. Instead, I discuss the economics of it, and the connections to industries based in China, and the strategies behind US automakers decisions for electrification.

Without subsidies and heavy government push, EVs may not fair so well with consumers, much less the enthusiast. China boasts high production of EVs, and US automakers are caught in the middle, and have little choice but to try, in their minds, to sell this on the US market.

But the big question is, who is behind this financially? Who is invested in what technology? SEC has rules for insider trading, but politicians don’t have any such oversight, any such bodies to ensure conflicts of interest don’t occur. When asked, they deflect. When accused, they retaliate.

When is a question problematic? It’s when the answer is downright criminal.
