I probably shouldn't have disturbed him. I always find something weird or gross in a pool skimmer basket. Over 70% of pool debris is filtered through the top skimmer basket. Which makes sense, because the quicker you get it out of the pool, while it is floating, the less it will pollute the water.

A filter screen is a sock like insert you can install into the basket to help collect more fine debris.

I inspect pool and spas for any defects, recommend upgrades, and test equipment. Remember, all underground plumbing needs a camera for inspection, a standard home inspection can not examine underground plumbing. Upgrade the inspection to use a sewer cam if the property is over about 20 years old.
