The Knob Creek Night Shoot October 2014

Six months ago, ABC News used footage from the Knob Creek night shoot to depict combat footage in Syria.

On October 13, 2019, ABC News aired footage on ‘World News Tonight’ supposedly showing a Turkish attack on a Syrian border town. News anchor Tom Llamas, spoke over the footage saying, “This video, right here, appearing to show Turkey’s military bombing Kurd civilians in a Syrian border town.” The following morning, it was broadcast on ‘Good Morning America’.

It didn’t take long for the public to start questioning the authenticity of the video. Various online sleuths compared the footage with that of the world famous Knob Creek night shoot which take place twice a year near the town of West Point, Kentucky. The footage was strikingly similar. In fact, one post showed what appears to be exactly the same video that ABC used, only with a crowd of onlookers at the bottom of the screen. It would appear that ABC cropped out the crowd.

The day after it first aired, ABC pulled the video and posted an apology. “We’ve taken down video that aired on ‘World News Tonight Sunday’ and ‘Good Morning America’ this morning that appeared to be from the Syrian border immediately after questions were raised about its accuracy. ABC News regrets the error.”
