Sunday Longplay - Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (TurboGrafx-CD) 100%

This week on Sunday Longplay, I'm revisiting a game I played long ago on my channel but wasn't too happy with how it turned out looking back on it now. So once again, here's Castlevania: Rondo of Blood!

Widely regarded as one of the greatest games in the Castlevania series (if not the greatest classic-style game in the series), Rondo of Blood follows the story of Richter Belmont, a descendant of Simon Belmont from the original Castlevania game, whose love interest Annette had been kidnapped by Dracula's servant, the dark priest Shaft. Along the way, he can rescue three other maidens including his distant relative Maria Renard (who then becomes a playable character), the nun Terra, and the village doctor Iris before finally saving Annette. There are many alternate paths through each stage, and you'll need to find them in order to save the maidens.

This game built upon the formula set by Castlevania 3 with alternate paths and more than one playable character. While Castlevania 3 had split forks in the road on a map screen after each stage, Rondo of Blood's forks in the road are in the stages themselves, with each path leading to a different boss at the end of the stage, and there's one in each stage from 1 to 4 on both paths. And as stated before, you'll need to find those alternate paths in order to save the maidens.

There have been several different versions of this game, including the SNES port Castlevania: Dracula X (which, while not a bad port, does get rid of a lot of what made the original Rondo of Blood great), and the remake on Dracula X Chronicles on PSP (which included a few new bosses, updated graphics, and the game's sequel Symphony of the Night as an unlockable bonus), which was also included on Castlevania Requiem on PS4..
