Proverbs 1:7
The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge; fools despise wisdom and instruction. (ESV)

Proverbs 12:1
Whoever loves discipline loves knowledge, but he who hates reproof is stupid. (ESV)

The main ingredient that keeps us from growing in wisdom is our attitude. There are many talented people who are miserable failures because of their attitude.

Roadblocks To A Teachable Spirit:

1. Pride:
Proverbs 16:5 The LORD detests all the proud of heart. Be sure of this: They will not go unpunished.

James 4:7-8 So humble yourselves before God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. 8Come close to God, and God will come close to you.

2. Rebellion and Independence:

1 Corinthians 10:9 We should not test the Lord, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. When we rebel we say three things to God: We DESPISE Your Laws. We DISCOUNT Your Counsel. We DISTRUST Your Power.

3. Insecurity:

Insecurity occurs in our hearts when we allow humanity’s rules govern our lives and not God’s

4. Foolishness:

Titus 3:3 At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures. We lived in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another.

Psalm 14:1 The fool says in his heart, “There is no God.” They are corrupt, their deeds are vile; there is no one who does good

5. Laziness:

Proverbs 13:4 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied.

Pathways to a Teachable Spirit & Success:

1. Humility:

Philippians 2:3-4 Do nothing from rivalry or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves. 4Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others.

Micah 6:8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

Psalm 138:6 For though the LORD is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.

2. Submission:

…to God’s Word
…to godly counsel and advice
…to our authority
…to our accountability partners

Ephesians 5:21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Proverbs 9:8 So don’t bother correcting mockers; they will only hate you. But correct the wise, and they will love you.

Proverbs 11:4 Riches won’t help on the day of judgment, but right living can save you from death

3. Character:

Being godly when no one is around.
Pleasing God, not man.

Proverbs 16:11 The LORD demands accurate scales and balances; he sets the standards for fairness.

Proverbs 11:1 The LORD detests the use of dishonest scales, but he delights in accurate weights.

4. Passion:

Proverbs 21:21 Whoever pursues righteousness and unfailing love will find life, righteousness, and honor.

Do you have a strong desire to make your words and actions line up with the truth?

5. Purpose:

Proverbs 14:15-16 Only simpletons believe everything they’re told! The prudent carefully consider their steps. 16The wise are cautious and avoid danger; fools plunge ahead with reckless confidence.
Have a willingness to work hard and become like Jesus.
