On Sunday, Buffalo Police Commissioner Joseph Gramaglia said that the gunman had been in Buffalo — which is a three-hour, 200-mile drive from where he lives in Conklin, New York — for at least a day prior to the shooting. “It seems that he had come here to scope out the area, to do a little reconnaissance work … before he carried out his just evil, sickening act,” he told ABC News. The AP reports that “investigators believe Gendron had specifically researched the demographics of the population around the Tops Friendly Market and had been searching for communities with a high number of African American residents.”
