Host Susan Hamilton talks with local school board candidates Jan Stell and Sherry Clemens about the reasons they are running for their seats, and how the school boards work with the State Board of Education. Evelyn Brooks is running for Texas State Board of Education place 14, and she has much to say about the position many candidates are taking that skin color creates a lesser class of people underpriveledged and therefore unable to attain exlemplary test scores.

Our curriculum is only going to be as good as our standards. In Texas, the State Board of Education provides options to each independent local school board according to the standards the state board has adopted. These seats are critical, and working together is the most immediate and effective strategy to correct the situations that have become obvious for most parents. The students of today are the workforce, council and board representatives, and caregivers of tomorrow. When local businesses support a local candidate, they can offer an instrumental influence that educates their staff and clientele about races they often know nothing about.
Early voting in RISD begins April 25th, voting day for local and state board elections in Texas is May 7th.
