Join the Edinburgh Together group for a public debate, with panel speakers including: Simon Miln, Scottish entrepreneur Pam Peters, Edinburgh resident Alan Miller, Together Co-Founder James Melville, Media Commentator Alastair Donald, Author, Co-Convenor of the Academy of Ideas Matthew Brown, Student, Edinburgh University Background: we have concerns about our Council's strategies regarding so-called Low Traffic Neighbourhoods, Low Emission Zones, and 20-minute Neighbourhoods. The Council has recently moved from planning to implementation, and the impact of these schemes is now clear to see. We would like to understand who benefits and who loses from these projects. With the Together Association UK, we are hosting a live public forum event to debate and discuss these policies. We are non-partisan and appreciate the potential for improvement in Edinburgh's local neighbourhoods. We feel open dialogue about these strategies is needed on the people's rather than the policymakers' terms. Together UK has supported local groups in cities across the UK to address the local impact that these projects are having. Many people across the country have expressed dissatisfaction with the implementation and feel left behind by the democratic process. Often in supposed consultation, the questions are framed to encourage certain kinds of answers. Some people also feel their opinions, when expressed in consultations, are not being respected. We aim to have a range of speakers from both sides who will share information and insights at the UK, Scottish and City levels. Most importantly, we will hear the views and experiences of local residents, businesses and workers. There will be an open question-and-answer time as well.

Live from Manchester with speakers including: Dominique Samuels, Political Commentator for Sky, BBC & GB News Prof James Woudhuysen, Visiting professor, London South Bank University; journalist Hilary Salt, actuary Chaired by Alan Miller, Co-Founder of #Together Britain is now officially in recession. With inflation ramping up to record levels and food and energy prices rapidly increasing, we are facing a really tough winter. It looks like there will be a very difficult economic period ahead. Jeremy Hunt, the latest Chancellor of the Exchequer, lays the blame at the feet of the global ‘windstorms’ as though these things happen just like the weather; out of our control and with little to be done about it. However, making the decision to ‘lock down’ the whole of society, shutting down the economy and then imposing ongoing restrictions, along with hundreds of billions of pounds spent to keep healthy people at home on ‘furlough’ was always going to have consequences. Many pointed this out from the start, but were shouted down, marginalised or ignored. Hunt has blamed the war in Ukraine for the drastic economic measures his government are taking and yet people were being forced to make decisions about whether to ‘heat or eat’ long before the outbreak of war. In truth, Britain has had many years of sluggish productivity, low wage growth and a lack of investment in key infrastructure. We once had strong nuclear ambitions, but that’s been jettisoned, under the guise of ‘Net Zero’. France meanwhile gets 60% of its energy from nuclear power. The political decision to remove direct democratic control from the Bank of England as well as the ongoing use of Quantitative Easing (QE) on an eye-watering scale, has only added to the UK’s pre-existing enormous debts. All of this has contributed to the precarious economic situation we find ourselves in today. The ‘Net Zero’ obsession has had a huge impact too, and without any public discourse to understand whether it in fact makes any sense, given the real problems we face. We see energy providers closing and being told to decommission, only to then be requested to ramp things up again. It seems the aspiration and indeed requirement for cheap energy, readily available for all, is now completely off the table. What does all this mean for us? Where are we, the public, in this discussion? How should we deal with the latest ‘cost of (lockdown) living’ crisis that looks set to hit ‘us’ even harder? When Hunt tells us ‘this will be painful’ why is it us who once again foots the bill? What happened to the idea of shaping the economy for our needs? What happened to short, medium and long term planning? Why have wages been so sluggish and productivity so low for decades? What, if anything, can we do about it?
