Boise police officer's shooting of Eli Nash deemed justified in fatal shooting, body cam released
According to a recent news release, Blaine County Prosecuting Attorney Matthew Fredback determined the actions of Boise Police Officer K. Paporello, who shot Eli Nash on Jan. 23, 2023, were justified under the law.
The release says the prosecutor reviewed multiple officers' on-body video and the complete investigation conducted by the Ada County Critical Incident Task Force led by the Garden City Police Department.
Before the shooting, Nash was on parole after his release from prison following a conviction of two counts of Sexual Exploitation of a Child by Electronic Means. Nash failed to register as a sex offender, and officers were investigating an additional sexual assault allegation against Nash.
On Jan. 23, 2023, officers planned to arrest Nash in partnership with Fugitive Recovery Agents from the Idaho Department of Corrections. Upon locating Nash in a car in a parking lot near 3801 E. Fairview Ave. in Meridian, officers moved in to arrest him. They used police vehicles to block Nash's car to prevent him from escaping.
Officers approached the vehicle, identified themselves, and commanded Nash to put his hands up. Nash did not comply and instead jumped into the back seat where the blankets covered the windows.
Paporello could see Nash through the rear windshield and saw he was holding a gun and pointing it toward the rear driver's side door in the direction of other officers. Paporello fired four rounds at Nash through the rear windshield.
Despite life-saving efforts by law enforcement, Nash was declared deceased on the scene. The firearm was later identified as a 9mm CZ-75 handgun.

Bodycam of Toledo officers releasing K9 on man during traffic stop from a license plate reader
New information and disturbing video of a K-9 released on a man during a traffic stop has come out Monday.
Last week, multiple officers with the Toledo Police Department were under investigation after releasing a K-9 on a man during a traffic stop. Now, body cam footage has been released.
According to a police report, TPD was alerted to a stolen license plate by a FLOCK camera. It turns out, that information was wrong. The FLOCK camera captured an image that came back to a Chevy Malibu but is pictured on the back of a late model red Dodge Ram Pickup truck.
The officer saw the truck leaving a carryout and stopped it. With guns drawn, officers tell the driver multiple times to get out of the truck. Then, the K-9 officer gets the police dog.
The driver of the vehicle, Brandon Upchurch is seen getting out of the vehicle with his hands up. While asking why he was pulled over, officers can be heard ordering him to face away and get on the ground.
Upchurch then starts to walk in the grass and the K-9 handler gets closer with the dog. Upchurch was then arrested and charged with resisting arrest and obstruction.
Officers then realize the information they were given is wrong and it is not the stolen plate.
“It’s what? It’s not the stolen plate. No. No what was the stolen plate? JLL7632. Did It just miss hit? I think it mishit. It ran 732 or 7632 from the way here, and it was good, then I saw this truck and saw it was on this truck. So that’s when I stopped it. So it was a misread. But I stopped it. I didn’t run this one. When I stopped him, I’m trying to get him to get out. At least, mean you saw when you guys got here. He kept telling me no,” an officer is heard saying on the body camera footage.
Medical attention was provided to the driver at the scene. Police claim they thought the driver was going to flee and did not know if he or the passenger in the truck had any weapons.
According to TPD’s K-9 policy, before deploying, the handler should consider the severity of the crime, whether the suspect poses an immediate threat to officers or citizens and whether the suspect is actively resisting or attempting to evade arrest by hiding or fleeing.

Bodycam shows several dogs attack Monona officers when checking an occupied vehicle in a vacant lot
Body camera video obtained by our Madison affiliate 27 News shows the moments several dogs attacked two Monona police officers.
According to Monona Police Chief Brian Chaney, it happened March 14, 2024 at the 900 block of East Broadway.
Chaney said officers were checking on an occupied vehicle in a vacant business parking lot.
27 News requested the body camera footage as part of an open records request. Monona police provided the video from the two officers who responded to the scene.
The video shows a man get out of the car to speak with the officer. After they finish talking, the officer begins walking back to his squad car when two dogs jump out of the truck.
The dogs are seen running towards the officer before he's heard calling for back up.
He tells the other officer through his radio that he's been bit and needs him to get their as soon as possible.
As this is happening, the two dogs are seen running around him and barking.
The officer gets back into his squad car while waiting for his partner to show up.
Shortly after, several more dogs pile out of the truck and can be seen running around the parking lot.
According to Chaney, roughly nine dogs were seen, all of which charged the officers.
The video shows the two occupants of the vehicle chasing the dogs around the lot while trying to pick them up.
At some points, the dogs can be seen nearly going into the street while still lunging at officers and barking.
"The original officer was bit again on the upper thigh," Chaney said. "The second officer, after receiving a bite also on the upper thigh, successfully deployed a TASER on one of the aggressive dogs."
The bodycam video shows the officer deploy the taser as additional units were requested to the scene to retrieve animal catch poles.
"Multiple Dane County Animal Service Officers arrived and took custody of two of the more aggressive dogs believed to have bitten the officers (quarantine protocol)," Chaney said. "The owner was able to secure the other loose dogs."
Chaney told 27 News, the officers were treated and released for their bite wounds at a local hospital.
"Animal Services reported there to be past bite history with various dogs and the owner involved in this incident," he said. "MOPD is working with Humane/Animal Services on this case."
He said animal services is serving as the lead in this investigation based on the past history and the circumstances involved.

Warren police body cam released in fatal officer shooting of armed suspect
Police body camera video was released of an officer-involved shooting that left an 18-year-old armed suspect dead Friday.
Warren police held a press briefing Monday, showing an armed man running out of a garage and pulling out a 9 mm Glock pistol, pointing it at officers before they opened fire.
Police are not naming the suspect out of respect for his family, said Lt. John Gajewski. The suspect was an 18-year-old high school student who was attending online classes.
The suspect was believed to be suffering from a mental health crisis. Investigators say he had no previous criminal record other than a few traffic stops, and had bought his gun legally from a private individual.
Video shows one officer began to enter the open garage, then turn and run back to his cruiser after seeing the suspect with his gun. After getting to his vehicle, the officer says "Gun gun gun" over the radio.
After running out from around a bush outside his family's house in the area of Ryan Road and 11 Mile, he can be seen "taking an aggressive stance" toward officers, said Interim Police Commissioner Charles Rushton.
Eleven shots were fired by two officers, with three rounds hitting the suspect. The 18-year-old did not fire on the officers.
"Once the suspect was on the ground, our officers immediately began life-saving measures including CPR," Rushton said, adding that officers revived the victim three separate times before Warren Fire arrived at the scene within three minutes. A"gain, I want to point out as the video shows this entire incident from the first time they saw the suspect with a firearm in his hand to the volley of gunshots from the police officers, is approximately seven seconds."
The 911 dispatch recordings were played, with a family member saying that his brother was "going crazy" and "assaulting everyone in the house." He added that he believed that his brother had not slept in four to five days.

Goose Creek Police release dash cam footage of brawl that led to 8 arrested
The Goose Creek Police Department has released dash camera footage of a brawl that resulted in 8 arrests and an officer collapsing over the weekend.
The footage has been redacted due to the amount of nudity on the videos, said Chief LJ Roscoe with Goose Creek PD.
Chief Roscoe also said the bystander people are claiming who helped the downed officer in the incident instead looked and walked away to pick up a “tensa barrier” in front of the bar.
The bystander did not render medical aid, however another bystander did get equipment for the collapsed officer which can be seen on a video circulating social media.
An officer stopped at Two Keys Tavern on College Park Road for a security check around 11:30 p.m. Saturday and observed several females fighting at the entrance.
He attempted to stop the altercation and was able to detain one woman, according to Goose Creek PD. Many females surrounded him during this, kicking and punching him while he was on the ground.
The suspects then attempted to flee, and the officer deployed his taser that did not make contact with the suspects or himself. The officer then suffered a medical emergency and collapsed to the ground.
Backup law enforcement arrived and secured the scene. EMS took the officer, who collapsed, to the hospital for treatment. He was released and said to be OK by officials.
A television film crew for ‘On Patrol Live’ was traveling with the Berkeley County Sheriff’s Office when they responded to the incident.
Authorities used the dash cam video and witness video to identify seven female suspects and arrest them.
All arrested were taken to the Berkeley County Detention Center. Those arrests include:
Breona Wright, 27
Merical Cromer, 23
Darricka Richardson, 23
Jah’mya Robinson, 23
Elasia Wescott, 24
Anjatonia Brown, 23
Zy Monia Fleming, 25
De’ja Lee
Officials said six of the females are being charged with disorderly conduct and resisting/assaulting police, and two females are being charged with disorderly conduct.
Chief Roscoe said police are still attempting to identify a ninth suspect.
Roscoe also shared an update on the collapsed officer’s condition:
“After being treated at the hospital and receiving follow-up medical care today, it was determined that the medical condition that caused him to collapse was blood pressure related. Due to the fact that the officer was in a position on his knees for an extensive period of time, it restricted the blood flow to his lower extremities. This occurred at a time when his system was heightened with adrenaline due to the incident itself. When he jumped up suddenly, and the blood flow was restored to the lower extremities, it caused his blood pressure to plummet, causing him to collapse. This is 100% consistent with what is seen on our dash camera. “
That officer has been cleared to return to duty.

Bodycam shows fire crew, good Samaritan working together to rescue man stuck inside burning home
Newly released body camera video shows the dramatic escape from a home that went up in flames in Southwest Florida.
One of the people inside the home was unable to get out, but thankfully, a good Samaritan and fire officials joined together to save their life.
The blaze erupted when an oxygen tank exploded.
Joyce O’Barske said she was outside the home when her husband rushed to her.
“My husband comes running — well, not running ’cause he’s an amputee — through the garage and says, ‘Joyce, there’s a fire,'” she said.
That’s when her husband started having trouble breathing, so O’Barske called 911.
Two police officers who arrived first on the scene found the couple stuck inside the garage.
Joyce walked out, but her husband was stuck in his chair because he is unable to walk.
As crews tried to help free the amputee, the garage door would not budge. That’s when a good Samaritan stepped in to help.
Thankfully, the three men were able to get the man out of the garage to safety.
Inside the house, officials described what they witnessed.
“We did find heavy fire and smoke conditions in the back of the residence. We were able to quickly get it out,” said a firefighter.
Days later, that good Samaritan got a reward for his efforts.
He received a Citizen Recognition Challenge Coin from the same first responders he helped.
The husband made it out of the garage all right.
“He’s got burn marks, but he should be OK,” said O’Barske.
The couple’s two dogs were also saved from the house.
Officials are investigating what caused the oxygen tank to explode.

Body cam video captures Gilbert police shooting suspect before suicide
Police released body cam footage Tuesday of Gilbert police officers shooting a suspect who died by suicide in front of them earlier this year.
Brett Shanahan, 40, died Jan. 21 from a self-inflicted gunshot wound after police shot at him when he refused to drop his weapons as he returned to his home near Greenfield and Warner roads.
Video shows Shanahan asking officers to “take the shot” as he approached them before pointing a long-barreled rifle at police, who fired shots. He then pointed a pistol at himself and shot.
Shanahan was pronounced dead at the scene, and his death was ruled a suicide by the Maricopa County Office of the Medical Examiner.
A coworker made an initial 911 call about 30 minutes before the fatal incident, saying that Shanahan had made statements about “wanting to take care of business” after learning his wife wanted to get a divorce.
Shanahan drove to the Gilbert home of the attorney representing his wife in divorce proceedings, but was unable to locate the attorney.
Officers then went to the home of Shanahan, who was wearing an armored vest, for a welfare check but found the residence empty.
The two officers at Shanahan’s home were talking to neighbors when he showed up in his vehicle, exited it, and started walking toward police. Shanahan died shortly after.

Richmond Police released body-worn camera video that showed an officer shooting and killing a man, later identified as 20-year-old Kenneth Sharp, on March 31 in Richmond, Virginia.
The video released by Richmond Police begins with a 911 call during which someone tells dispatch they saw a man, who appeared to have a gun, banging on and lying atop a car along the 1900 block of Cedar Street.
The caller said the man eventually got into the car.

He later told the second officer that he saw a man and a woman who appeared to be asleep inside the vehicle.
After a brief conversation, the officers approach the vehicle again.

Sharp, who was in the passenger seat, opens the door and is seen picking up and then holding an AR-style rifle.
As the first officer retreats, Sharp begins to get out of the car with the gun.

As the first officer radios in for help, the second officer tends to the woman in the driver's seat.
She seems unaware of what transpired.

"Once a full investigative report is complete, the report will be submitted to the Office of the Commonwealth Attorney. Bodycam of deadly police shooting shows suspect armed with knife approach Salt Lake City officers
Salt Lake City Police have released bodycam footage of the officer-involved critical incident from Tuesday, April 2, that left a man dead.
The incident occurred on the 800 block of South State Street. Police received a 911 call from an employee working at a Chevron gas station.
The employee reportedly told police that the suspect, later identified as Cameron Ammon Cloward, 36, had a knife and tried to stab him through a window. Based on the employee’s statements, police believe Cloward may have committed an aggravated robbery by using — or threatening to use — a dangerous weapon during the commission of a robbery or attempted robbery.
Officers arrived at the scene at around 2:30 a.m., finding Cloward walking in the parking lot while holding a knife. Cloward reportedly began walking north from the gas station on the east sidewalk of State Street. Cloward allegedly turned around, faced officers, and started walking back into the gas station parking lot.
Bodycam footage from one of the officers on the scene captured the officer telling Cloward to stop walking toward the gas station.
The footage then shows Cloward holding his knife with the blade positioned under his chin. Officers gave Cloward commands to stop and get on the ground, but he refused to comply, repeatedly saying, “I don’t care.”
One SLCPD officer reportedly requested a “less lethal shotgun,” before four officers then fired shots, resulting in Cloward’s death.
No officers were injured during the incident. The knife found at the scene matched the description provided by the store employee as a pocketknife. The blade of the knife was found extended, police said.

Body-cam shows Metropolitan Police officers being shot at during Enfield raid
Body-cam footage shows the moment police officers were shot at by an armed thug as they raided a house. Metropolitan Police Territorial Support Group officers stormed the property of Koby Haik, 31, in Southgate, North London, on April 5 last year.
A shocking video shows Haik standing at the top of the stairs armed with a baseball bat before he fired two shots from a gun as cops entered the address.
Officers arrested Haik and the recovered weapon was sent for ballistic analysis, which later turned out to be an imitation containing blank rounds.
He was later linked to being part of a drugs' importation gang and has now been jailed for seven years at Isleworth Crown Court.
Detective Chief Inspector Inderjit Kaur said: "This investigation highlights some fantastic detective work by Met Police officers to identify and uncover a dangerous group involved in drugs importation and supply, which we know can have a terrible effect on local communities.
"We also saw incredible bravery and professionalism from TSG officers who were shot at as they arrested one of the suspects.
"Thankfully, only blanks were fired, but thanks to this investigation, a dangerous weapon is off the streets and a group of dangerous criminals are now behind bars."
An investigation was launched after two women reported their suitcases and passports were stolen while waiting for a taxi on arrival in London on a flight from Los Angeles on January 11 last year.
Detectives carried out CCTV enquiries and traced the suspects - a man and woman - back to a car registered to Eleanar Attard, 45.
Just two days after the theft, officers attended her home in Broxbourne Herts., where they arrested Attard, along with her husband, Nicholas Panayiotou, 43.
When officers examined Panayiotou's phone, they found evidence that the theft was part of a wider conspiracy to import and then steal a large amount of cannabis.
A WhatsApp group chat found by officers contained details of a plan to smuggle 58kgs of cannabis into the UK from the USA.
Officers also found evidence of how the group plotted to steal the cannabis from the two women recruited to import it.
Panayiotou and his wife were to pose as customs officers and pretending to seize the suitcases and passports from the women soon after they arrived into the UK.
ANPR data gathered also showed Panayiotou and his wife travelled to a hotel and then on to their restaurant 'A Touch of Greek' both in Chingford after the theft.
Three videos found by detectives on Panayiotou's phone also showed large quantities of cannabis.
Meta-data analysis showed the videos were taken the day after the theft of luggage took place and were filmed at the restaurant.
Extensive enquiries were made by officers to identify three other people on the WhatsApp group.
Constantinos Zavros, 34,was identified as being connected to those supplying the drugs in the US and officers found evidence he also travelled to the US.
Luke Wileman, 32, was identified as advising the gang on how to sell the drugs and suggested suitable clothing for Panayiotou and Attard to wear in order to pose as customs officers.
Zavros, of Southgate, and Haik were both convicted of conspiracy to import cannabis, conspiracy to supply cannabis and conspiracy to steal.
Haik was also convicted of possession of an imitation firearm with intent to cause fear of violence.
Wileman, of Horsham. and Panayiotou, of Broxbourne, were both convicted of conspiracy to supply cannabis and conspiracy to steal.
Zavros was jailed for six years and 11 months. Haik was sentenced to seven years' imprisonment and Panayiotou was caged for four years and one month.
Wileman is due to be sentenced at the same court on 9 May.
Attard, of Broxbourne. was charged with theft of suitcases and passports and was jailed for eight months.

The incident began around 1:40 p.m. on March 29 when an officer with the Sparks Police Department initiated a traffic stop on a Ford Expedition with no license plates in the 1500 block of Greenbrae Drive.
Sparks Police say the officer tried to make contact with the driver, later identified as Anthony Wade of Reno. The body cam video from the officer shows Wade immediately pull out a gun and shoot at the officer through the driver’s side window, striking him, causing multiple injuries to his neck and scalp.
The officer then returned fire before Wade drove off, headed east on Greenbrae before running a stop sign at the intersection with Rock Blvd. A U-Haul truck headed south hit the Expedition in the intersection, disabling Wade’s car.
Wade then fled the scene of the crash on foot. The officer headed east, where a witness told him he saw a person with a gun.
Sparks Police got a 911 call that a black male adult had forcibly entered a home in the 1400 block of Prospect Avenue. The caller said she had been in the kitchen cooking when Wade entered her home with a gun. The woman told dispatch she used a knife to cut Wade, who then fled out of the back of the residence.
Officers from multiple agencies set up a perimeter and a shelter in place order was given to people in the immediate area. The Sparks Police Department, Reno Police Department, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office then initiated a door-to-door search for Wade.
An investigation revealed that, as this was happening, Wade entered another residence and took a woman hostage. Officers were able to make contact with that woman around 2:00 p.m., who was trying to leave the area in a vehicle in the 1300 block of Prospect.
Officers told the driver that there was a shelter in place order and that they needed to go back inside. She then drove back into her garage, closing the door behind her. Officers later learned she had been taken hostage by Wade, and that he had forced her to leave the search area as he hid in the rear passenger compartment of the car.
A deputy with the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office then saw the kidnapped woman lying in the floor of the doorway. As the deputy identified himself as police, Wade started shooting from inside the residence, hitting the deputy and a Sparks police officer. Officers returned fire and dragged the victim to safety.
Wade fled out the house’s backyard, jumping over a fence, and landing in a neighbor’s yard in the 1300 block of Greenbrae. That homeowner then called 911 at around 2:15 p.m., saying she was hiding in her bathroom after Wade broke into her house.
Wade then fled out of the back of the house, attempting to hide behind a shed in the backyard. About 15 minutes later, the victim exited her house without incident.
A short time later, Wade reentered her home through the back door. Crisis negotiators and SWAT were then called to the scene, where they tried to get Wade to leave without further incident for around five hours. Wade did not respond.
At around 7:30 p.m., SWAT entered the house’s garage. Wade, who had been hiding, started firing at the officers, hitting the gun of one of the officers. The SWAT officers then continued to fire at Wade as they exited the garage.
After police were not able to get a response from Wade, they reentered the garage, where he was found dead. An investigation revealed Wade to be in possession of a .40 caliber, semiautomatic handgun, with an extended magazine.
The Sparks Police Department says the entire incident lasted around 8 and half hours.
The officers who were injured were taken to a local hospital, where they were treated for their injuries and released.
