Although this is technically not his final speech, it is his final long-form address to the German people on the eve of Adolf Hitler's birthday. He had a short final broadcast on May 10, 1945.

Operation Barbarossa, also known as the German invasion of the Soviet Union, was the code name for the invasion of the Soviet Union by Germany and some of its Axis allies, which started on Sunday, 22 June 1941, during World War II. The operation was named after Frederick Barbarossa ("red beard"), a 12th-century Holy Roman emperor and German king. Over 4 million soldiers participated in the initial assault.

By the start of World War II, much of the Kriegsmarine were modern ships: fast, well-armed, and well-armored. However, the war started with the German Navy still at a distinct disadvantage in terms of sheer size with what were expected to be its primary adversaries – the navies of France and Great Britain. Although a major re-armament of the navy (Plan Z) was planned, and initially begun, the start of the war in 1939 meant that the vast amounts of material required for the project were diverted to other areas. The sheer disparity in size when compared to the other European powers navies prompted German naval commander in chief Grand Admiral Erich Raeder to write of his own navy once the war began "The surface forces can do no more than show that they know how to die gallantly." A number of captured ships from occupied countries were added to the German fleet as the war progressed. Though six major units of the Kriegsmarine were sunk during the war (both Bismarck-class battleships and both Scharnhorst-class battleships, as well as two heavy cruisers), there were still many ships afloat (including four heavy cruisers and four light cruisers) as late as March 1945.
