To automatically moving the barriers when passing a train, the original sketch and two conventional infrared sensors Arduino are used.

The project has been named URB (Universal Railway Bus), consists of three parts — a Android App, rules for applying and writing Arduino Sketches (Protocol), and any Arduino hardware. You can interconnect any number of Arduino boards in series, or using a URB topology. Thus, there are no hardware restrictions on the number of devices (turnouts, signals, lights, crossing mechanisms, and other railway items).

Integration into the system of sensors and several motor-drivers control algorithms allows you to build any automated train movement system. You can build real-life interlocking and play as the main station master.

The URB system can control any mechanisms on the railway. As an example, I have developed an original design of a turntable. The basis of this turntable is Body Twister Fitness circle. I have been designing and assembling this device for six months and this video shows the final result. The mechanism is made in such a way as to fit completely into the space under the crossing of the move and not to leave its dimensions. This mechanism converts the translational motion of the thrust from the servo to the rotation of the barrier and at the same time has a damper. The horizontal angle of the thrust vector can be set by you in a wide range.

As a development of the idea of an infrared sensor module, I propose a way to mask this system on your railway layout.

The default PWM sampling frequency for ATmega328 and ATmega2560 is from 500 to 1000 Hz, depending on the selected GPIOs and Timers of MCU. These frequencies are in the sound range, and you can hear the unpleasant squeak of the engine of the locomotive, especially at the start moving. Preconceived opinions of some modelers is the need to set the PWM sampling frequency above 16 kHz so that this squeak is not audible. This is the wrong opinion – the higher the PWM frequency, the worse the traction characteristics of the DC motors. My experience gained as a result of my own experiments is confirmed by manufacturers of model locomotives with DCC control – do not increase, but rather lower the frequency. The frequency of the PWM on DCC decoders is about 100 Hz. This video shows the relationship between the frequency change and the movement of the locomotive

On this module I separated the infrared sensor emitter and receiver. These details deployed relative to the rails by 45 degrees and are located at a certain height above the rails. Also on the receiver is a black slit mask that removes stray radiation. The height of the sensor and the IR-LED above the rails for different scales is selected experimentally based on the minimum horizontal continuous line of wagons in your collection. This design allows you to get a guaranteed signal of the presence of a train at the sensor zone. The system works correctly at any speed of the train, any the number of cars or types of cars and any length of the train.

Hello, again, railway modellers! I hope you are interested in the topic of using CNC and 3D-printers to accelerate your layouts development and implementation of your ideas. It seems to me that the main obstacle to mass application in machine tool modeling is the complexity of programming parts. This is a really incomprehensible and complex process, and it is further complicated by the software.
