Residents rescue seven cats and two dogs trapped in Thai house fire

This was the moment firefighters rescued seven cats and two dogs from a burning house yesterday evening (November 19) at 7 pm in Samut Prakan, Thailand, while the owner was visiting a nearby market. Somat Sakoolcharoen, 40, returned home with his wife, Mai, to find flames had broken out in the two-storey townhouse. He then ran to neighbours for help after noticing the smoke pouring from the building - knowing that his beloved rescue dogs were still inside. Emergency services arrived and extinguished the flames while staff and brave neighbours rushed inside to salvage the pets. Miraculously, they all emerged unscathed - with only smoke-stained fur. Somat said: ''I returned home to find there was a lot of smoke pouring from the house so I called out to neighbours for help. I knew it was so important to save the lives of all the cats and dogs. ''They have all been rescued from the street after they were homeless or injured. If they were sick, we cured them and cared for them.'' Fire crews discovered that the blaze had been caused by a short circuit in an electric fan which had been left running. It took them 30 minutes to control the inferno. Somat added: ''I want to thank the courageous work of the fire brigade. The controlled the situation quickly and without them, none of the cats or dogs would have survived.''

A merry-go-round with real horses tied to the metal pillars was spotted at Shuangliu Wanda Plaza in Chengdu City in southern China last Sunday (November 18). The video shows three children with helmets riding on three horses tied to the metal pillars and walking in circles around the rotating circular platform. Some wildlife authorities have said the carousel is legal and the horses are not being mistreated. "There is no law against using animals for amusement rides," said Zhou Ming, head of a wildlife rescue centre in Chengdu. The real horse merry-go-round has stopped running temporarily for safety training for the staff and will be reopened once the training finishes.

Heroic Paradise resident saves couple burned by raging wildfire

Residents at Paradise, California were caught out by the fast-spreading Camp Fire, which barred one couple from escaping, badly burning them while they sought shelter. According to filmer Travis Wright (seen in still image), he had wanted to evacuate with his neighbours Paul and Suzie Ernest the night of November 8. A caravan of vehicles attempted to flee north, then south but the fire cut off all routes out of the town. Wright and the Ernests then abandoned their cars and belongings, and attempted to flee on quad bikes via a rocky trail leading a mile away from Wright's house. The three took cover behind a boulder but were separated, being forced to take cover and wait for the fire to pass by. Wright filmed the carnage during and after and spotted the Ernests silhouetted against the boulder they had sheltered, seen in the video propped up on the right side of the rock. He said of the harrowing experience: "The fire had surrounded us from all directions. At the end is the boulder where Paul and Suzie were sheltering. "You can see their silhouettes on the right side of the rock. I quit filming because I was afraid of what I would find when I approached them because they had become silent." Paul and Suzie Ernest survived the flames, but were badly burned, and were rescued after Wright was able to bring two rescue workers on his quad bike and they were evacuated safely. They are now in hospital care, and reportedly will not be allowed to leave for at least two months. Later Wright returned and discovered the caravan of fleeing vehicles had been consumed by the fire, with many dying in their cars.

Two pet dogs spark chaos after chasing king cobra in front yard

Two pet dogs sparked panic after chasing and biting a king cobra moments after it was caught in a front yard in Thailand. The fearless pooches roused their family when they started barking in the front yard of the home in Chachoengsao, south-central Thailand, at 3pm. Homeowner Patawee Anantachai, 43, and wife Nong, 35, walked outside to see why they were making such a noise and were shocked to see their beloved dogs in a stand-off with the deadly snake. Patawee called for them to return home but they stayed outside intimidating the cobra - the world's largest venomous snake - as it menacingly spread its giant hood and prepared to strike. Rescue workers arrived and crept up on the snake before lassoing it. But the capture sent the dogs into a frenzy with 10-year-old Khao leaping forward to bite the snake's body while the smaller dog, five-year-old Tong, joined in. The snake catcher was forced to run around in circles while dragging the cobra away from the dogs and also trying to keep the agitated snake away from the people watching. Patawee said: ''My heart was pounding and my wife ran away. I've never had such a close encounter with a snake.'' Patawee said that he was afraid that the snake would kill his dogs, which were determined to try and bite the serpent. He added: ''The dogs were barking at the cobra and trying to strike it with their paws. They were not afraid because they don't know how dangerous a cobra is. They wouldn't come in and I didn't want to go anywhere near the snake, so I called the emergency services as quickly as I could.''
