The state has approved 12-million-dollars in low-income housing tax credits
The credits will cover about 90-percent of the funding for the affordable housing project. Construction is expected to start early next year and will build 32 one-bedroom and six two-bedroom apartments in downtown Holland at which used to be the site of the Community Action House. Rent will start at around 400-dollars.

General Motors confirmed today they will end production of the Chevrolet Malibu
The vehicle is built at the company's Fairfax Assembly Plant in Kansas City, Kansas along with the Cadillac XT4 compact SUV. The automaker will move production of the Chevrolet Bolt to the plant and will continue to make the XT4 on the same assembly line. The current Malibu is the ninth generation of the model since it was brought back in 1997 and GM has sold ten-million Malibu's globally.

The owner of a West Michigan dog rescue is avoiding jail time.
Last year, authorities seized 78 dogs from Cober's Canine Rescue in Norton Shores after the dogs were found living in deplorable conditions. The owner of Cober's Canine Rescue, Lisa Cober, had previously pleaded guilty to dozens of felony animal cruelty charges. Per the plea deal, Cober avoided jail time and has been sentenced to five-years of probation.

The Grand Traverse Sheriff's Office says the body of a 24-year-old Traverse City man
He was found around 10 a.m. yesterday in Spider Lake near where his unoccupied boat had been found driving in circles. He had been reported missing since he did not return from a fishing trip Sunday afternoon. His name has not been released.

The Kent County Jail is reopening its mental health unit for women
The chief deputy says it is part of their work to help people re-enter society more successfully. It can hold around 45 inmates and has murals painted by E'lla Webber of Grand Rapids to help deinstitutionalize the setting. Cole notes females respond differently than males and a setting like what they have set up is important to them.

The United Auto Workers Union says over 94-percent of workers at Daimler Truck voted
The vote by workers at plants in North Carolina, Tennessee, and Georgia means a profit-sharing plan and cost of living adjustments for the first time. UAW officials in Detroit have been focusing on organizing at auto plants in the south. The Daimler workers build Freightliner and Western Star Trucks and Thomas Built buses.

Gas prices are eleven-cents a gallon lower to start the week in the state.
Triple-A Michigan says the average is now three-dollars-60-cents, up four-cents in the past month and 19-cents more than last year. A 15-gallon fill up costs 54-dollars on average in the state. Michigan's highest price is in Jackson at three-74, while the lowest price is in Traverse City at three-53.
The 95th Tulip Time Festival is underway in Holland.
It kicked off Saturday and runs through Mother's Day, bringing thousands of people to the Lake Michigan shoreline from all over the country. The festival has a huge impact on the Holland-area economy with people staying at hotels, dining out, and more. The theme for Tulip Time this year is Bike and Blooms, and local artists have added 13 sculptures at Pedals at the Park, and they are tulip-themed and made with recycled bicycle parts.
The Detroit Zoo is hosting the Wildlife Rescue traveling exhibit featuring 12 oversized
The zoo is the first in the world to host the exhibit and the sculptures will be on display through September. Officials say each animal sculpture represents a conservation story. The Guest experience senior manager says display is more than just an exhibit, its an interactive way to learn about conservation.
The 21st year of the Lake Express is underway on Lake Michigan.
The high-speed auto passenger ferry between Muskegon and Milwaukee hit the water on Friday. The ferry was first launched on June 1st, 2004. The cost is 111-dollars-50-cents one way and 193-dollars round trip. Discounts are available for seniors, college students and active military.

The closure, prompted by water damage caused by recent heavy rains at Portage Creek west of Escanaba in Delta County. The damage, primarily affecting the east approach of the bridge, resulted from the creek overflowing, undermining the pavement. A posted detour is in place to guide motorists around the affected area.

FEMA is scheduled to close its disaster recovery centers in Detroit and Taylor on Wednesday.
Both centers opened after severe storms, tornadoes, and flooding devastated parts of the area back in August. Residents have until May eighth to apply for disaster assistance.

The pay for the Ottawa County Board of Commissioners is likely going up by 60-percent
The county's compensation board recently voted to approve the pay hike over the objection of compensation board chairman Larry Jackson, who called the raise "outlandish." The county board chair's salary would rise to 43-thousand-400-dollars a year, the vice chair would go up to 34-thousand-400-dollars, and the rest of the commission would be paid 33-thousand-300-dollars. The county board will vote on the raises May 14.

Sales at Ford Motor Company dropped in April overall but hybrid sales
The automaker sold over 179-thousand cars and trucks with sales of the popular F-Series trucks. Broncos and SUV's falling off. Ford says they remain committed to hybrid vehicles and plans to have an entire lineup by the end of the decade. Sales of EV were up by 129-percent over last year but still are not meeting expectations. SUV sales declined by nearly ten-percent in April and Ford said they will be increasing incentives for customers.

An economic study has found Kent County would be the best place in west Michigan
Zoo officials said in February 2021 they were considering building one and said last October they wanted to see what would be a better location between Kent County or Muskegon County. The zoo's CEO saying the research showed both communities offer "unique destination traits of lakeshore recreation versus urban core entertainment." The aquarium would create nearly 25-hundred jobs, generate over 231-million-dollars in state and local tax revenue in the first decade, and have a two-point-nine-billion net economic impact on Kent County over ten years.

Paws With a Cause is seeking funding in its first public capital campaign
The organization has been helping people with disabilities for the past 45 years and their headquarters have not been improved much since 1994 in Wayland. CEO Michele Suchovsky says they need more space and modern materials and two of their three buildings will be renovated. They will also add a 42-hundred square foot canine village with updated living quarters for 64 dogs being trained.

The Binder Park Zoo is now open for the season.
This year, visitors can feed and brush goats as a new permanent home and habitat for the beloved goats has been completed. Also, visitors can once again partake in the Skylark Ridge ropes course and zipline, which is open for its second season. The zoo is open from nine to five Monday through Friday, nine to six on Saturday's and ten to six on Sunday's.

A campaign to unionize staffers of the Michigan House of Representatives is underway.
Organizers say one of the key reasons for this effort is to change the current pay system to ensure a living wage and to remove the Speaker of the House's ability to hire and fire. Teamsters are currently gathering union cards with the hope of getting sixty-percent of the 220 legislative staffers on board.
