The Titan was a tugboat sank in 2004 as a part of the NC Artificial Reef program. Titan was manufactured in New York in 1909 and was originally steam-powered. Titan was originally built for the Erie Railroad but was bought by the Panama Railroad once the canal was completed. Today she sits mostly upright, about 15 miles out of Beaufort Inlet in 60 feet of water.

On the evening of June 18, 1918, approximately 28 nautical miles from the North Carolina coast, the merchant ship SS Florida, with her lights extinguished in order to evade enemy submarines, collided with the merchant ship Shurz. Shurz sank in three hours. The wreck of the Schurz is contiguous and lies generally on her keel, listing slightly to her port side. The high spots on the wreck are the boilers. performing evasive maneuvers, but to know avail; it was too late. The Florida slammed in to the starboard side of the 255 foot long Schurz just aft of the bridge killing one sailor and injuring the commander. The Florida immediately reversed engines and backed away from the Schurz revealing a gaping wound in the hull. With water filling the holds rapidly, it was determined that the ship was doomed. The Ashkhabad was a Russian Tanker traveling from NY to Cuba being escorted by the ASW trawler Lady Elsa. They were runnig zig-zag course as ordered to avoid German u-boats. The tanker was hit on the starboard side by a single torpedo and sunk by its stern end in the shallow water off Cape Lookout. The ship was abandoned and all the crew were taken to Morehead City. Today Ashkhabad lies in 55 feet of water. What is left of the Ashkhabad is very broken-up and scattered about.

I found a cool calabash gourd pipe in a local antique shop for only $40 but I didn't have a way to store or display it without lying it on its side. So I made my calabash pipe stand from red oak.
