Rain Oh Rain - lyrics
Performed by, Dan D. Dirges
I was born one rainy morning
Just before my mama died
Five years later daddy left me
The rain was pouring down outside
Rain oh rain leave me alone
You're icy fingers chill my bones
Seems like trouble always comes around
Each time the rain starts a falling down
It seems the years pass by so quickly
I grew up fast I grew apart
Next thing I knew the rain was falling
Out across the prison yard
Now when I die wont you make me this promise
To bury me in a deep dark cave
So I may know while I am resting
No rain will fall upon my grave

Saints and Sinners is a song written by David Francey. Normally this song is played on the guitar but I worked up this banjo arrangement I hope you might enjoy.
SAINTS AND SINNERS
by David Francey - lyrics
Banjo tuning - dADFsharpA
It was Sunday morning in our town
And I sat on my steps and I stared at the ground
And I bowed my head while they shuffled past
All the saints being called to the morning mass
Chorus
And off in the distance there rang a bell
Way off in the distance there rang a bell
And it rang for the saints and the sinners as well
Way off in the distance there rang a bell.
I remember the lessons of Sunday school
And I can't help but think maybe I'm the fool
But I see no sign of a greater plan
Just the joy and the sorrow of my fellow man
And here we stand while life rushes past
Between the first breath and the last
And here we stand between East and West
And here we stand between birth and death
I was watching the news the other night
There was a war on the Left; there was a war on the Right
And it's no surprise that it's us or them
It's a long way from heaven to Bethlehem.

Hey, Johnnie Cope /Traditional Scottish Folk Song / Guitar and Vocal
"Hey Johnny Cope", "Hey Johnnie Cope" "Hey, Johnnie Cope, are Ye Wauking Yet?", also "Hey Johnnie Cope, are you awake yet?", "Heigh! Johnnie Cowp, are ye wauken yet?", or simply "Johnny Cope" is a Scottish folk song. The song commemorates the Battle of Prestonpans, fought on 21 September during the Jacobite rising of 1745.
I sing and play it on the nylon string folk classical guitar in open D tuning. I may post a banjo version someday. My version is heavily influenced by the Dave Walters version who I have recently become a HUGE fan of. YouTube channel, St. Andrews Folk Club, who I follow posted a concert that he recorded in his folk club back in the 1970`s of Dave Walters and I was completely blown away. Besides singing and playing traditional folk songs so incredibly well he talked about the songs before he sang them. I highly recommend checking out that concert. I would leave a link but I heard YT doesn`t want us doing that anymore and I`m not sure the channel owner would want me too (to?) either. It`s an easy search though.
Hey Johnnie Cope - lyrics
Traditional Scottish Folk Song
Dave Walters version (sort of, can`t quit make out some of the words because of the thick Scottish accent)
Hey Johnny Cope are you waking yet
Or are you sleeping now I would bet
Haste that you get up the drums to beat
Fy Cope rise in the morning
So John Cope rode and did not ride far
But neer a rebel he came near
Until he landed at Dunbar
Bright and early in the morning
Hey Johnny Cope are you waking yet
Or are you sleeping now I would bet
Haste that you get up the drums to beat
Fy Cope rise in the morning
Cope sent a challenge to Dunbar
Come fight me Charlie if you dare
And if it be by the chance of war
You`ll all die in the morning
Hey Johnny Cope are you waking yet
Or are you sleeping now I would bet
Haste that you get up the drums to beat
Fy Cope rise in the morning
Up now Johnny get up and run
Before the highland bagpipes make it in
Now expected to sleep in your whole skin (Are you expecting to sleep the whole morning?)
Than to flee away in the morning
Hey Johnny Cope are you waking yet
Or are you sleeping now I would bet
Haste that you get up the drums to beat
Fy Cope rise in the morning
When Johnny Cope to Dunbar came
They all starred at him, “Where’s your men?”
“The Devil confound me, I do not know,
For I left them all in the morning.”
Hey Johnny Cope are you waking yet
Or are you sleeping now I would bet
Haste that you get up the drums to beat
Fy Cope rise in the morning
So John Cope rode but did not ride far
For neer a rebel he came near
Until he landed at Dunbar
Bright and early in the morning
Hey Johnny Cope are you waking yet
Or are you sleeping I would bet

Racoons Tail Has Rings All Around / Traditional Folk Song / Mountain Banjo
Raccoons Tail Has Rings All Around or Raccoons Tail Is Ringed All Around or Squirrel. So many names for this song and even different melodies. Played on a mountain banjo, two finger thumb lead.
Raccoons Tail Is Ringed All Around - lyrics
Racoons tail is ringed all around, Possum`s tail is bare
Rabbit aint got no tail at all just a little wee bunch of hair,
just a little wee bunch of hair
Possum up an apple tree, Raccoon on the ground
Raccoon says to the possum, Won’t you shake them apples down
Won’t you shake them apples down
Squirrel he`s a funny little thing, he`s got a bushy tail
Squirrel he steals the farmers corn and he puts it on the rail,
and he puts it on the rail
Partridge she`s a pretty little thing, she`s got a speckled breast
Partridge steals the farmers corn and she takes it to her nest,
and she takes it to her nest
Hawk he is a scheming bird schemes all around the sky
He schemes into my chicken house and he makes my roost hens fly
and he makes my roost hens fly
Possum he`s a cunny little thing, he travels after dark
Possum aint scared of nothing, tell he hears my hounddog bark
Tell he hears my hounddog bark
Racoons tail is ringed all around, Possum`s tail is bare
Rabbit aint got no tail at all just a little wee bunch of hair,
just a little wee bunch of hair

Old Bo (song I wrote about my dog that died)
Old Bo (song I wrote about my dog that died)
I wrote this song a long time ago but this is the first time I ever posted it on YouTube. The two pictures I used in this video are not pictures of my dog but they look just like him. Btw Obama had a dog whose name was also Bo and he recently died. I send my thoughts and prayers because I know how hard it is to lose a loved one and a family member.
Written and performed by
Dan D. Dirges-"cool and dark dan samples"
Well I had an old dog with a furry golden coat
A waggin` tail and a big black nose
I guess you could say he was a purdy good dog
At least most of the time
Well he chased a few cars and he chased a few cats
But he never hurt nobody
And if you petted him once and you petted him twice
He`d be your life long buddy
Ol Bo why`d ya up and go dont ya no I`m missing you now
Ol Bo why`d ya up and go dont ya no I`m missing you now
Well he ran thru the fields and he ran thru the meadows
Swam in the Spokane river
Then one time much to my surprise
He caught a big fish for dinner
Well me and that old dog we had a lot of fun
No matter what the weather
And thru the wind and the rain and the snow and the cold
We would be always together
Ol Bo why`d ya up and go dont ya no I`m missing you now
Ol Bo why`d ya up and go dont ya no I`m missing you now
(here comes the sad part where Ol Bo dies)
Well the years rolled along and nature took its course
Bo he died right out on the porch
I found him there the very next morning
Tears welled up in my eyes
So I buried him out in the backyard
With the sun burning up in the sky
And with a cool breeze blowin` and a sweet song singin`
He picked a bad day to die
Ol Bo why`d ya up and go dont ya no I`m missing you now
Ol Bo why`d ya up and go dont ya no I`m missing you now

Lonesome Valley {Woody Guthrie Version} {Clawhammer Banjo}
Lonesome Valley is a traditional folk song. Woody Guthrie changed the verses and kept the chorus the same. In the intro I talk a little about Woody then sing and play the song on the banjo, clawhammer style. Kind of a long winded outro.
Lonesome Valley - lyrics
Banjo Tuning - dADFsharpA
You gotta walk that lonesome valley,
You gotta walk it by yourself,
Nobody here can walk it for you,
You gotta walk that lonesome valley
by yourself.
Some people say, John was a Baptist,
Some folks say he was a Jew,
But your holy scripture it will tell you
That he was a preacher too.
You gotta walk that lonesome valley,
You gotta walk it by yourself,
Nobody here can walk it for you,
You gotta walk that lonesome valley
by yourself.
Daniel was a Bible hero,
Was a prophet brave and true,
In a den of hungry lions
Proved what faith can do for you.
You gotta walk that lonesome valley,
You gotta walk it by yourself,
Nobody here can walk it for you,
You gotta walk that lonesome valley
by yourself.
There is a road that leads to glory
Through a valley far away,
Nobody else can walk it for you,
They can only point the way.
You gotta walk that lonesome valley,
You gotta walk it by yourself,
Nobody here can walk it for you,
You gotta walk that lonesome valley
by yourself.

And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day?
And what was in those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?
The Virgin Mary and Christ were there,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
The Virgin Mary and Christ were there,
On Christmas Day in the morning.
Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;
Pray, wither sailed those ships all three,
On Christmas Day in the morning?
O they sailed into Bethlehem,
On Christmas Day, on Christmas Day;

Black Waters - Easy Guitar, Folk Song
Black Waters is a song I think Jean Ritchie wrote. I discovered this song thru the Jim Ringer and Mary McCaslin version. This song reminds me very much of John Prine`s song, Paradise. My version is played on the guitar in Drop D Tuning a half step lower. A simple thumb strumb pattern.
Black Waters - lyrics
Jean Ritchie, Jim RInger Mary McCaslin
Guitar thumb strum in Drop D tuning (C sharp)
Well I come from the mountains, Kentucky's my home
Where the wild deer and black bear so lately did roam
By the cool rushing waterfall the wildflowers dream
And through every green valley, there runs a clear stream
Now there's scenes of destruction on every hand
And only black waters run down through my land
Sad scenes of destruction on every hand
Black waters, black waters, run down through my land
Well, the quail, she's a pretty bird and she sings a sweet tongue
In the roots of tall timber she nests with her young
The the hillside explodes with the dynamites roar
And the voice of the small bird is heard there no more
And the mountain comes a sliding so awful and grand
And the flooding black waters rise over my land
Sad scenes of destruction on every hand
Black waters, black waters, run down through my land
In the coming of springtime we planted our corn
In the ending of springtime we buried our son
In the summer come a nice man saying everything's fine
My employer just requires a way to his mine
Then they tore down my mountain and covered my corn
Now the grave on the hillside 's a mile deeper down
And the man stands a talking with his hat in his hand
While the poison black waters rise over my land
Sad scenes of destruction on every hand
Black waters, black waters, run down through my land
Well I ain't got no money, not much of a home
I own my own land, but my land's not my own
But, if I had ten million, somewheres thereabout
Well, I'd buy Perry county and throw them all out
And just sit down on the banks with my bait and my can
And watch the clear waters run down through my land
Well, wouldn't that be just like the old promised land?
Black waters, black waters no more in my land
Black waters, black waters no more in my land

Brother Green (The Dying Soldier)- lyrics
Banjo in C tuning cCGCE
performed by Dan D. Dirges
Oh brother Green, please come to me,
For I am shot and bleeding,
Now I must die, no more to see,
My wife and my dear children.
The southern foe has layed me low,
On this cold ground to suffer,
Stay brother stay and lay me away,
And write my wife a letter.
Tell her that I'm prepared to die,
And want to meet her in heaven,
Since I believed in Jesus Christ,
My sins are all forgiven.
My little ones, I love them well,
Oh could I once more see them,
That I might bid them a long farewell,
But we will meet in heaven.
Oh brother Greem I`m dying now,
Oh see I die so easy,
Oh surely death has lost it's sting,
Because I love my Jesus.

For they will call for me in vain,
Tell Them I`ve gone to heaven.
