I`ll Rise When The Rooster Crows is a traditional American Folk song. The Binkley Brothers Dixie Clodhoppers recorded this song in 19 and 28. I play it two finger thumb lead on the mountain banjo. If the banjo sounds quieter lately it`s because I stuffed a huge car wash sponge in the back to cut down on the overtones and volume. Also I`ve started adding more compression so I can crank the volume really loud without clipping. It`s all a work in progress folks. Thanks for listening. 1. Down by the Glenside, also known as, The Bold Finian Men was written by, Peadar Kearney in 1916 around the time of the Easter Rebellion which happen in April of 1916, when the Irish attempted another overthrow of British rule in Ireland. Green, Green Rocky Road is a song was written by, Len Chandler? Based on other older traditional songs best I can gather. Dave Van Ronk`s incredible interpretation of the song is the one that became famous. Oscar Isaac played this song exceptionally well for the Coen Brothers movie, Inside Llewyn Davis. Sam Hall is Irish traditional folk song ballad. Sam hall robbed from the rich to give to the poor just like Robin Hood only he got hung. Fingerpicking acoustic guitar and vocal. There are a lot of different ways to approach performing this song. This is a mellow way of playing it. Then there is the rowdy pub version. This song is so good it would sound good singing it in any style. Minivan Man is a song I wrote. It`s sort of a parody of the early 1960`s hot rod songs that the Beach Boys and Jan and Dean sang. They bragged in their songs about how big the engines were, how fast they were, how much chrome they had and all the chicks they would pick up. This song is in the style of 1950`s Rock and Roll. Johnnie Cowp, are ye wauken yet?", or simply "Johnny Cope" is a traditional Scottish folk song. The song commemorates the Battle of Prestonpans, fought on 21 September during the Jacobite rising of 1745. I sing and play it this time of the mountain banjo. My version is heavily influenced by the Dave Walters version who I have recently become a HUGE fan of. YouTube channel, St. Andrews Folk Club, who I follow posted a concert that he recorded in his folk club back in the 1970`s of Dave Walters and I was completely blown away. The original Groundhog is a traditional folk song about a family out hunting for a groundhog to kill it and eat it, tan it`s hide and make shoe strings, banjo heads and other things out of the skin. Grandma even made gravy out of the groundhogs brains. This version I found on a Lisa Loeb album, which I absolutely fell in love with. It`s a much happier, kinder and gentler version, which tells of the story of the groundhog and how it can tell when spring is coming. Really makes you feel all warm and fuzzy on the inside. I call it the vegan and/or Gen Z version of the original traditional Groundhog. I play a little two finger thumb lead on the mountain banjo with a fiberskyn head instead of goat or groundhog skin. Also nylgut banjo strings instead of gut strings from a sweet little pussycat. Drinking Of The Wine is an old Traditional African American Spiritual. Bascom Lamar Lunsford learned it at an African American Church in 1902. It`s on his CD, Ballads, Banjo Tunes and Sacred Songs of Western North Carolina. I sing and play it this time on the guitar in open D tuning. Right hand technique is sort of like the Carter Scratch which is named after Mother Maybelle Carter. It`s an uplifting spiritual song that southes the soul. I hesitated weather to post this or not because the vocals are a little too buried to my ears. The guitar, vocal balance is off. I like the vocals more up front and prominent. I hope I can find a way to record better in this style on the nylon string guitar because it`s so much fun playing this way in open tunings. Hobo's Lullaby was written by, Goebel Reeves. Woody Guthrie once stated that this was his favorite song. I have never heard Woody sing this song unfortunately but I have heard his son, Arlo Guthrie sing it on one of his early albums and I still think that`s the best rendition of this song I have ever heard. He really tapped into the lonesome misery of the song but also the optimism. I play it on a mountain banjo, two finger thumb lead. Also there is a long commentary introduction. There Will Come Soft Rains is a song written by, Seth Mountain. Seth adapted the lyrics based on a poem by, Sara Teasdale. Do yourself a favor and check out Seth`s channel but beware, there are not many two or three minute top of the pop chart style songs. Seth`s songs sound truly amazing with insightful thoughtout lyrics that cut and run deep but are not meant to be hastily absorbed and forgotten. Keep Your Lamp Trimmed and Burning is a traditional spiritual blues song. My favorite version is by Blind Willie Johnson and his wife, Wille (same name), although he played slide guitar and I arranged a simpler version. The song traditionally is sung by a man and a woman interplaying off each other.

I think I paid $30 for it. I like it because of the wide string spacing. Good King Wenceslas is a Traditional Folk Song and Christmas carol that tells the story of how a benevolent king invites a poor homeless person into his castle for dinner. I sing and play it on guitar, fingerpicking style in drop D tuning this time. One of my most favorite songs ever. Seems like I record and post another version every year for Christmas. O Holy Night, or Oh Holy Night is a well known "Christmas song" that was written by Placide Cappeau, who was asked by a priest to write it. He himself was a poet and curiously a socialist and an atheist. Adolphe Charles Adams composed the music. The English translation version is by, John Sullivan Dwight. There are many great versions of this song, it is very popular, however I noticed that most of them only sing one or two verses. I sang all three verses and arranged a simple fingerpicking version for the guitar. Go Tell It On The Mountain is a traditional Folk Song. We don`t know who wrote it but musicologist, John Wesley Work, Jr., a collector of African American folk songs and folk songs in general published it many moons ago. The song celebrates the birth of Jesus Christ and is often song around Christmas time. Thanks to Peter Paul & Mary, the well know folk group trio, the song broke free from just being labeled a Christmas song and is now sung the whole year round. Simon & Garfunkel also recorded a most outstanding version, as well as many others. This is my clawhammer banjo version arrangement and I really enjoyed singing and playing this one. However you may need to take a couple aspirin and lie down and put a cold cloth on your head after listening to my version because my clawhammer is very harsh is spots. Specifically my index striking finger. I hesitated whether to post this or just do it over. I will do it over on the guitar and banjo some day. In the mean time I`ve been trying to re-learn the clawhammer using my middle finger instead of index finger which will definitely help with the harshness of my playing. I`m also getting better at the upstroke index lead technique which I`m really excited about and look forward to trying out. Pete Seeger and Derroll Adams both played predominately in that style. Henry Wadsworth Longfellow wrote this poem, Christmas Bells on Christmas day in 1864. His son was wounded during the American civil war and he was despondent from that and with the war dragging on but on Christmas he heard the bells and the singing of the carols and he was hopeful the war would soon be over. In fact in 4 months it would be. I liked the poem so much I made up a song for it many years ago and felt like singing it again. John Mason Neale translated the Latin text in 1864 to English and has been a favorite for many to sing around Christmas time but really these Christmas songs should not be limited just singing them around the holidays but year round.
