During a workout at the gym, Mary Jo Rapini suffered a fatal brain aneurysm. After dying, she had a near-death experience which included arguing with God and insisting that she didn’t want to return to Earth. After giving her “the illusion of a sweet protective chuckle,” God told Mary Jo that “she could do better” and sent her back. Once back, Mary Jo made a miraculous recovery. Mary Jo is now a psychotherapist specializing in intimacy, sex and relationships. Additionally, she is a lecturer, author and television personality. "What I live with every day now is I live with this incredible memory or whatever has been branded on me. I ask myself: 'Am I doing enough? Am I standing up for God's goodness? Am I being conscientious with what He gave me? Am I loving others the way He told me to practice loving more?' And the answer is always 'I'm trying, but it is very difficult.' I will tell you one thing. I think I'm a better therapist. And I think I'm a better therapist because I judge less. And I think compassion is the most important gift we give each other. Just get out of this mindset of who's right and who's wrong. I mean, we're all connected. And we're all going back there. All of us. And there is a God and He is our Source. He is my Source. I believe He's yours too, but you have to get there on your own. And I believe He knows each and every one of us. He connects to us in a way that we can't possibly understand. We're very limited with our minds, with our brains, with our bodies, too. It's left me with a deep sense of compassion. And abundance. I can't look at anything without thinking what can I do? This generous act of integrity opens the way to the Real Self. The 44-year-old man was a French civil servant in the tax office, with a wife and two children. He was not considered physically or mentally disabled and his development and his socialization were normal. But when he reported to a hospital in Marseille in 2003 reporting a mild weakness in his left leg, the doctors looked for his brain but found only what looked to be a great black hole. The man had suffered from hydrocephalus (also known as "water on the brain") as a child, a condition in which an abnormal amount of cerebrospinal fluid accumulates in the brain cavities, causing pressure inside the skull. To treat the condition, a valve had been inserted in his head to drain away the fluid when he was a six-month old baby, but it was removed when he was 14. Professor Keith Kendrick here explains what is perhaps more interesting in this case: that seemingly any brain can operate in this normal way, even under such harsh conditions, if only it is given the time to adapt of its own accord. The implications of this are pointed to, with suggestions of the possible directions that future neuroscience research might take, in the rest of his free public lecture on 'Future Brain'. Dr. Bruce Greyson discusses how cumulative research into near-death experiences challenges both a classical physical view of reality, and an exclusively neuroscience-based view of consciousness. Classical physics offers accurate descriptions of everyday mechanics, but it is not able to describe physical effects in more exotic realms, such as extremely high speeds, extreme cold, or atomic-sized objects. Post-classical physics, including special and general relativity and quantum mechanics, were developed to expand our understanding of physical reality to those realms. Among the unexpected outcomes of these theories was a radical revision of our previous assumptions about the absolute nature of space and time (from relativity), and the even more radical possibility that consciousness may be an important ingredient in the description of physical reality (from quantum theory). This latter possibility remains highly controversial because the modern neurosciences, which are based on classical physical assumptions, can adequately describe many aspects of brain function and their observed correlations with conscious and unconscious experience. But there are growing doubts that the observed correlations are causative, that is that the brain literally causes conscious experience. “Near-death experiences” are one type of phenomenon that strongly challenges the prevailing assumptions in the neurosciences. Lucid consciousness, cognition, perception, and memory under extreme conditions such as cardiac arrest, presumably cannot be associated with normal brain function, prompting a reconsideration of the nature of consciousness and its potential physical properties. Considered the "father" of NDE research, Dr. Bruce Greyson discusses why near-death experiences matter to experiencers, science, healthcare and society-at-large. About Dr. Bruce Greyson Dr. Bruce Greyson is the Chester Carlson Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the University of Virginia. He was previously on the medical faculty at the University of Michigan and the University of Connecticut, where he was Clinical Chief of Psychiatry. Dr. Greyson has consulted with the National Institutes of Health and addressed symposia on consciousness at the United Nations and at the Dalai Lama's compound in Dharamsala, India. He has earned awards for his medical research and was elected a Distinguished Life Fellow of the American Psychiatric Association, the highest honor bestowed by that organization. Thousands of people across the world and throughout the centuries have reported near-death experiences (NDEs). One of the questions that people often ask about near-death experience is whether they provide proof that we survive death. They don't provide proof for other people. They certainly provide proof for the experiencer, but not for the rest of us. But there are some experiences that do provide something that's at least evidence, if not proof. And those are cases in which the experiencer encounters a deceased individual who was not known at the time to have died. One person that I know, Jack, was hospitalized in his mid-twenties, and he had one nurse who worked with him every day. And one day, she told him that she was going to be taking the long weekend off, and there'd be other nurses substituting for her. And while she was gone, he had another respiratory arrest where he had to be resuscitated. And during that arrest, he had a near-death experience in which he found himself in a beautiful pastoral scene, and there to his surprise was this nurse, Anita, walking towards him and she said, "Jack, you can't stay here with me. You need to go back into your body. And I want you to find my parents, and tell them that I love them and I'm sorry I wrecked the red MGB." He then woke up back in his body in his hospital bed- tried to tell this to the first nurse who walked into his room. She got very upset and left the room in a hurry. It turned out that this nurse of his, Anita, had taken the weekend off to celebrate her birthday, and her parents had surprised her with a gift of a red MGB for her 21st birthday. She got very excited, jumped in the car, took off for a drive, lost control, crashed into a telephone pole, and died just a few hours before Jack's near-death experience. Now, there's no way he could have known or expected that she was going to be dead. And certainly, no way he could have known how she died- and yet he did. And that seems to be evidence that something about this nurse, Anita, still persisted after her death, and was able to communicate accurate information to Jack. Does that mean we live forever? Not necessarily. It certainly means something about our minds can survive death of the body, at least for a time. Virtually every near-death experiencer that I've talked to has said without any doubt in their minds, that we do continue after death. No matter how they describe their NDE, they describe having existed without their physical bodies. When their physical bodies were essentially dead, and yet they were feeling better than ever. There's got to be more to the world than just the physical realm to explain these events. I think the ultimate question raised by near-death experiences is: What are we as human beings? Are we just physical machines? Are we spiritual beings? Are we some amalgam of both? I don't know the answers, but now I'm much more comfortable with not having the answers. I think the important part of near-death experiences is what they tell us about this life we're in now. That we're all interconnected. Near-death experiences are profound events that often radically change the lives of those who have them. Features of near-death experiences include a sense of leaving the physical body, a life review, and encounters with a divine being or deceased loved ones. While some dismiss near-death experiences as dreams or the hallucinations of a dying brain, people generally do not have the same kinds of hallucinations. In contrast, the descriptions of near-death experiences are remarkably consistent across culture and time. Dr. Bruce Greyson is Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences at the UVA School of Medicine. He served on the medical school faculty at the Universities of Michigan, Connecticut, and Virginia. BRUCE GREYSON: Near-death experiences are profound, subjective experiences that many people have when they come close to death or sometimes when they are, in fact, pronounced dead. And they include such difficult to explain phenomena as: a sense of leaving the physical body, reviewing one's entire life, encountering some other entities that aren't physically present that they sometimes interpret as deities or deceased loved ones. And at some point coming to a point of no return beyond which they can't continue and still come back to life. It's natural for people to think that near-death experiences are kind of like dreams or hallucinations. No two people have the same type of hallucination. Whereas near-death experiences are basically the same across people, across cultures, across centuries. I think if you look at what things typically cause hallucinations- metabolic changes, drugs, changes in oxygen level, brain injury, those things produce certain known effects: confusion, agitation, belligerence. They're very different from the typical calm, peaceful, consistent content of a near-death experience. We've looked at specific things that may cause a hallucination. It was thought that maybe lack of oxygen to the brain would have a role in near-death experiences, since no matter how you come close to death, lack of oxygen to the brain is one of the final, common pathways. But those who report near-death experiences actually have better oxygen flow to the brain than people who don't report NDEs. Likewise, we thought drugs given to people as they approach death may be causing these experiences. And what we find again is that the more drugs people are given as they approach death, the less likely they are to report a near-death experience. So drugs and lack of oxygen are not causing NDEs. They may in fact, repress having an NDE. You can look on a dream as just a random series of visions; a way of processing problems in your life, and finding solutions. There are phenomenological differences, differences in the content between dreams and near-death experiences. Near-death experiences often have accurate out of body perceptions, whereas dreams and hallucinations do not. And that to me is probably one of the best ways of distinguishing between a dream and a near-death experience. Is there any connection between dreams and near-death experiences? The fact that both of those are processed by our brains ultimately says that there's got to be some similarities in how we describe them, how we understand them, how we relate them to other people. Many near-death experiencers report things that other people can't verify right away. So we assume that they were just imagination or fantasy, and yet they insist, "It's real. It's happened to me. I know it." Philosopher Abraham Kaplan talks about the story of a traveler who went to a distant land, and came back with a fantastic story about a beast who can travel for days and days and days without water. And he tells this to his people in his town and they get together and say "We don't know if this can be real, but we're gonna get the wise men together and have a meeting and decide whether this beast can exist or not." And the traveler says, "What do you mean can exist? I saw it." So it's like, if you were hit by a truck, and someone says you just imagined it. You know whether you're hit by a truck or not. There's no doubt in your mind. And that's the way near-death experiencers relate to their NDE. They feel like, 'There's no doubt in my mind, this is a real experience I had. I'm a professor emeritus of psychiatry and neurobehavioral sciences, and I've recently come out with a book called "After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal About Life and Beyond." Near-death experiences are profound, subjective experiences that many people have when they come close to death, or sometimes when they are in fact pronounced dead. And they include such difficult-to-explain phenomena as a sense of leaving the physical body, reviewing one's entire life, encountering some other entities that aren't physically present that they sometimes interpret as deities or deceased loved ones. When they return, they often are profoundly changed by this experience. The most common change we hear from near-death experiencers is that they are no longer afraid of death. They describe having existed without their physical bodies, when their physical bodies were essentially dead, and yet, they were feeling better than ever. Most near-death experiencers say they are more spiritual, but not more religious. They tend to look on organized religions as being simplifications of what the spiritual world really is. That what's important to them is the interconnections, not the dogma that goes along with it, and they think that the type of deity they encountered, if they did, is not as limited as the God they were taught about in church. It's much bigger than that, much more inclusive. It leads them eventually to the 'Golden rule,' which is actually part of every religion we have: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." But they feel that this is not for them anymore- a guideline we're supposed to follow but a law of nature. The vast majority of near-death experiences that we hear are pleasant, if not outright blissful. That sounds like a wonderful thing to happen but it can create a lot of problems in your life. I've talked to lots of people who were concerned that their loved one, now, is not the same person that they married. Lives were based previously on something that they thought they shared that they no longer shared, that can really disrupt the marriage and there have been reports of a high rate of divorces among near-death experiencers. Furthermore, a lot of the families will say when a crisis happens, the experiencer may just take off and go see if they can help without concern of just leaving the family behind. So they often feel, "Why do you love other people as much as you love me? I'm your family," which is often very hard for the children of the near-death experiencers. One fellow I knew was a sergeant in the Marines in Vietnam, and was shot in the chest. And during that operation, he had an elaborate near-death experience. When he came back from that, the idea of shooting someone else was totally unthinkable to him. He felt that he was no different from the people he was shooting at. And he had to eventually leave the Marines, which had been his lifelong goal to be a Marine, ended up coming back to the States, and retraining as a medical technician. And I've heard this again and again and again from police officers and military officers who retrained in social work, medical care, clergy, teaching, so forth. Being a psychiatrist, you know, I've worked with people for about 50 years now- I know how difficult it is to help them make changes in their lives. And here you have an experience that takes place in a matter of seconds or a fraction of a second that totally transforms their attitudes, values and beliefs and behavior. People have thought about ways of trying to induce an NDE-like experience safely through guided meditation, hypnotherapy, psychedelic drug use, and these attempts have pretty much not been successful. And when I talk with near-death experiencers about this, they say that one of the most therapeutic things about the experience was the complete lack of control you have. So much of our lives are spent on trying to maintain control of our lives, which is tremendously anxiety-provoking and in a near-death experience, no matter what happens to you, you are totally out of control. Something else is in control of what's happening to you and yet, you feel better than ever. It often helps people deal with their anxieties, certainly their anxiety about death and dying, which often boils over into other areas of being anxious about other things in life as well. And when they come back, they realize you don't need to be in control all the time, and that giving up control, stop being so obsessional about being in control, makes life much more enjoyable for you. And it may help the rest of us in learning how to make our lives more meaningful and fulfilling. ...................
