You Think 6 lb Mono is STRONG?? (Fishing Minocqua, Wisconsin)
The Minimalist Fisherman: In the Field focuses on bass fishing tips and techniques that will help you catch more fish all throughout the Midwest. Everything we write about - we test.
If it's good - we keep it. If it's not - we minimize it!
This outing took place the 3rd week of July. After 2 days of TOUGH FISHING, we were able to regroup and get some quality bites fishing the simple, effective techniques: jigs with MEAT (leeches) and some soft plastics, on LIGHT LINE. Water temps had increased to near 80° after a few weeks in the 70s.

Creek Fishing: GRINDING POOLS for Smallmouth BASS (Kayak Fishing a SECRET CREEK Part 2)

This outing took place the 1st week of June. We caught smallmouth bass in the morning using active topwater techniques, but then the bite slowed and we decided to go sub-surface. A finesse football head jig with Cabin Creek Salty Spider Parts was just the ticket... and another little bait made an appearance as well...

3-Second Fishing Rod Holders (EASILY CATCH MORE Crappie, Bass & Catfish!) | Jon Boat Mod
I recently picked up a few rod holders from a company called Lunker Trail. I have no affiliation with this company, and this is an unbiased review of their product - along with a detailed rundown of how I'm installing it on my jon boat. It's been a great upgrade so far! Lunker Trail sells this product at a reasonable price and they shipped it FAST - I have been very impressed with them so far.

2 WARNINGS for ALL FISHERMEN! ... this is SERIOUS! (Watch Out)
I almost didn't make this video because... well... LOOK AT ME. I'm a grotesque mess, and this infection (or whatever it is) came as a direct result of not being careful while fishing shallow, WARM, bacteria-loaded mucky ponds. But I mean... how can you say no when the bass are there, and willing to bite?
You can't.
And the good news is that you don't have to - but you better take these precautions RIGHT NOW, to protect yourself and your family.

Several years back we started The Jon Boat Project. It went well and the boat is still in use 6+ years later! We're going to go back and clean up as much footage as we can to walk through the steps to get the boat to a comfortable, functional place.
It's awesome.
From this point on I'll show you how everything is holding up and take a closer look at some of the modifications that were made.
This was a great, relatively simple project that anyone can do. It’s also a great alternative to shelling out thousands on a brand new fishing boat if you just need a simple – but comfortable – alternative. Not to mention… it’s really fun.

Northern Wisconsin Summer Fishing Tips: Big Bass & Pike (Multi-Species Tactics Clear Minocqua Lakes)
Northern Wisconsin Fishing - especially near Minocqua - can be an absolute blast! BIG smallmouth bass and northern pike cruise these super-clear, cool waters. You'll even find the occasional largemouth bass and musky. Other gamefish like crappie, bluegill and perch are present to round out your day or fill the livewell... and did I mention musky?
Wisconsin fishing at it's finest.
On the previous morning we had decided to look for stable water in the 20 and even 30 foot range. Storms had plagued our trip, and the water temperature had actually cooled by about 10 degrees since we arrived. The search had paid off, and after finding some large clumps of weeds (with defined edges) peppered with scattered logs, we hit paydirt at a depth of about 15 feet.
This same pattern worked well on the OTHER side of the lake. We worked similar situations across a large shelf, or flat, and looked for clumps of weeds and sunken logs while making sure we paid attention to where the massive balls of bait were... because the smallmouth always seemed to be right behind...
My Kalin's Hand-Tied Bucktail Jigs were responsible for the biggest smallmouth (tipped with a live leech) and I also used a 1/16 ounce Erie Dearie Hog Hunter Weedless Jighead with 1/2 of a Z-Man Hula Stick. I ended the day working a Strike King Swim-N-Shiner on a weighted swimbait hook through the weeds, landing the biggest pike I've ever pulled out of this lake.
Some days, it just all comes together.

Fishing w/ Kalin's Jigs in Wisconsin | Multi-Species & Minimalist (Simple Tips Catch EVERYTHING)
Kalin's by the Acme Tackle Company makes tournament grade tackle at reasonable prices for those of us that fish for fun. On a recent trip to Wisconsin (near Minocqua) we were presented with difficult conditions. Rain, temperature drops in both the air and water, and spooky fish.
We decided to look deeper for more stable water and work some weedy humps down 20 - 30 feet. After an hour probing the depths, we motored in to a stretch of shoreline with clumps of weeds separated by sunken timber and sandy bottom. After finding a few good clumps of weeds next to logs in about 15 feet of water - we hit pay dirt.
Later that afternoon we went out again to fish for smallmouth bass and northern pike, and we found some good fish in very similar locations. We also switched up to Z-Man plastics because of all the panfish - the leeches we were using in the morning were in short supply at the local bait shop. Guides took priority (as they should), so we had to use them sparingly.
My Kalin's Hand-Tied Bucktail Jigs stole the show though, landing the most fish on the day (tipped with a leech), but a few other presentations worked on bass & pike as well. | http://theminimalistfisherman.com/

Wisconsin Bass Fishing for Timid Biters
Wisconsin bass fishing can be fun... and it can also be extremely challenging. This year when we went "up nort", we were greeted with extremely hot temperatures - and 80 degree water. That was followed by storms, cool mornings, and a drop of about 10 degrees, all within 3 days.
Couple that with the fact that we were fishing an extremely clear, spring fed lake with extremely clear water... and you've got a recipe for one heck of a challenging trip.
But, we did what we had to do, put our heads down and kept grinding.
As you can see here, a handful of techniques worked, and we were able to make contact in areas that were similar to where we caught just a few good fish the 3 or 4 days prior.
Hard work makes victory so much sweeter!
If you are considering visiting #Minoqcua, or a nearby lake in #Wisconsin - go for it! Get out there and get #Fishing!

Wisconsin Bass Fishing
Wisconsin fishing for the mighty Smallmouth Bass - and his close friend, Mr. Walleye - near Minocqua, WI. We fished for 3 days straight with some success, but nothing to write home about - casting every bait in our arsenal. Spoons, jerkbaits, jigs, bobbers, cranks, swimbaits, plastics of every kind - you name it. However on the third day, during an afternoon outing with my son, we came across an area with a ton of boat and swimmer traffic... and a HUGE load of panfish.
Crappie, pumpkinseed, bluegill, rock bass and perch...
Guess who we saw swimming underneath?
Yup. Big smallmouth. BIG SMALLMOUTH. The big smallmouth that had not been in the "regular spots", like mid-lake humps, rock bars, sandy flats with scattered logs, or even the deep inner weed edges of isolated coves - and when we started to work the new area, we caught 'em, along with their sneaky friends, the walleye.
We had success with jigworms, leeches, finesse Texas rigs and weighted wacky worms.
Perseverance was the name of the game, and even though it took us several days to find them after the water temperature had dropped drastically with summer storms, the effort made success all the sweeter.
Tight lines! | http://theminimalistfisherman.com/

Donkey Tails & Mule Jigs by Mule Fishing Supply Co. | Product Review & Field Test
Mule Jigs have a few key features that help them stand out from the crowd.
First, the head design is rounded, but flat on the bottom. This is similar to the traditional “mushroomhead jigs” popularized by Gopher Tackle some 40 years ago. This allows the plastic to sit flush against the jighead. The hook shank is also on the shorter size – which is absolutely critical if you want to get the maximum amount of action out of your smaller plastics.
The shorter shank on the hook means less metal up in the trailer, allowing for a wilder kick back and forth – even at a slower retrieve speed. Watching a mean green sunfish track a tiny kicking swimbait, then deciding to swipe up and hammer it like a mini-muskie, is truly a sight to behold!
Donkey Tails are super stretchy and durable – which means they can be a pain in the butt to rig up until you get the hang of it. One quick tip is to get the bait started on the hook, then PULL the top part of the plastic up past the jighead and release – don’t try to PUSH it like a standard plastic (it won’t get past the keeper without bending it).
The lack of salt & scent is no problem because the Donkey Tail is a visual bait. It needs to be seen and felt in the water to get bit – which is why it pairs so well with the lightweight Mule Jigs and their shorter shank. Even in the smallest size, the little segments on the body, and the chunky paddletail coming off the slender rear portion kick out a ton of vibration.
In this video we'll cover when to use Mule Jigs, where to use Donkey Tails - and cover several other features of these products by the Mule Fishing Supply Co.

FIXED! Water Damaged GoPro w/ Media Mod | Repair All Models | How To Fix (Simple)
Fix a Water Damaged GoPro Hero and Media Mod using this simple trick. NOTE: THIS IS A LAST EFFORT TECHNIQUE TO BE USED AFTER ALL OTHER METHODS HAVE FAILED! While the temperature should not harm your GoPro Hero or your GoPro Media Mod, only attempt these steps at your own risk.
When I fell out of my kayak into the creek, my GoPro and Media Mod filled up with water. The ports, the battery compartment, the microphone... all of it. This caused my GoPro to stop working completely - it was damaged, ruined, and as you can see in the video the microphone shorted out before it stopped recording altogether.
Fortunately, when I got home I was able to fire up a simple tool that sucked all of the excess moisture out of the water-logged components, completely repairing my GoPro & Media Mod.
Sweet!
Let me know how it works for you, and until next time tight lines.

Illinois Smallmouth Bass Fishing: Top 3.4 Baits
Northern Illinois Fishing for Smallmouth Bass? Let's do this. The following are my TOP 3.4 BAITS FOR ILLINOIS SMALLMOUTH that will put more of bronzebacks in the boat (or on the shore)!
Illinois has a lot of issues... but one thing that we are blessed with is an abundance of smallmouth bass - and also sauger, saugeye, largemouth bass, drum, green sunfish and crappie - and some surprisingly beautiful areas to fish. If you know how to catch 'em, it's JUST about enough to make you want to stay...
... not quite... but real close.
Happy fishing! Hope you catch more smallmouth the next time you go fishing.

Northern Wisconsin Bass Fishing a Beautiful Spring Fed Lake
Northern Wisconsin Bass Fishing a Beautiful Spring Fed Lake with my Dad in the morning - then my son & brother in the evening. We caught a variety of species on this trip (which makes sense, as we were using jigs & spoons and even small wacky rigs) along both deep & shallow weed edges, but the best fish were smallmouth bass and a HUGE rock bass that my son landed.
Minocqua Wisconsin offers some of the best fishing, eating and atmosphere that you'll find anywhere. We are huge fans of The Cheese Board and many of the downtown shops... and while these places near the lake help us enjoy the middle of the day... the morning and evenings are for one thing, and one thing only... fishing.
The Manitowish Chain O Lakes has a lot to offer up in that regard - and we specifically target areas shared by multiple-species like smallmouth bass, walleye, panfish, northern pike, and even the occasional largemouth bass - although the Wisconsin largemouth are usually not as large as what we grow in our neck of the woods.
We use fishing techniques that appeal across the board. Spoons flash like injured baitfish, while plastics resemble natural forage - or at times, chartreuse flash at dusk to get the attention of hungry predators in low light conditions.
If you're in the area, make sure to use the tips & techniques shown in this video to catch your fill - and if Paul Bunyan's opens back up - make sure to visit. That's a good time as well.

Cabin Creek Bait Company: Oval Sinkin' Worms (FULL FISHING REVIEW)
The Cabin Creek Bait Company has healthy little lineup of quality fishing jigs, tackle and soft plastics. I have no affiliation with this company, but man - I sure would like to - as their Oval Sinkin' Worm has become a MAJOR STAPLE in my bag of fishing tricks. This coming year, the Oval Sinkin' Worm will be in heavy rotation as one of my primary stickbait options for largemouth and smallmouth bass.
While their product line is more limited than say, Tackle Warehouse or Bass Pro Shops - these products can be considered "specialist". What's the old saying? Jack of all trades - master of none?
Cabin Creek Baits has mastered a few options (check out their Salty Spider Parts for Smallmouth fishing in rivers & creeks) and I have been very happy with the results. I'll often opt for a senko style bait over a Rat-L-Trap or a creature bait, a football jig or crankbait - depending on the conditions - but the Oval Sinkin' Worm is different than a YUM Dinger, it's different than a Yamamoto Senko... and I'll show you why. | http://theminimalistfisherman.com/

Uncle Josh Wax Worms vs Nightcrawlers

Kids LOVE Wisconsin! There's tons to do: swimming, biking, shopping, restaurants like Paul Bunyan's and more - not to mention fishing. Fishing near Minocqua, Wisconsin can by dynamite.
But when it rains... it's tough to get the family out in the boat!
So do what you can with what you got.
