Kevin’s Story
Like many of us, Scott Voelker’s The Amazing Seller podcast introduced Kevin to e-commerce. After investing a season’s worth of part-time income into his Amazon business, Kevin began working full-time for his own dream selling private label. Kevin and Todd connected through Brand Accelerator Live, an event that allows e-commerce professionals to share their secrets to success. Today, Kevin shares his secrets with you.
Cast A Wider Net
Kevin believes everything is a function of time; the faster you cast a wider net, the faster you’ll see results. Kevin has successfully increased his professional growth by multiplying his sales channels through international expansion. Despite fears of complex tax laws, Kevin feels most international regulations are easier to interpret than U.S. tax laws.
Canada
If you've never expanded internationally, Canada is a fantastic place to start. Their tax laws are simpler (and friendlier) than Europe’s and Canada is closer. In other words, shipping is cheaper. Not to mention, there's generally less competition. Kevin recommends hiring a CPA and registering for GST and HST, Canada's goods and services tax. If registered you'll recoup what you paid in GST through Amazon. Fill out your RC1 form here! While you lose Amazon's UPS discounts, Kevin has discount codes that always come through at checkout (EASY & FAST).
Europe
Looking to expand to Europe? Start in the U.K. The U.K. has a 20% VAT tax included in your selling price. However, if you're using a prep center, ask how they deal with VAT because when it comes to business-to-business deals, prep centers may in fact add VAT on top of the selling price.
Amazon also has an algorithm in the United States that determines where your products should be shipped for expedited delivery. The only way to replicate this in Europe is by clicking that you accept Pan-European. By accepting this agreement, you're responsible for products not only in the E.U. but in countries where products are stored (Poland, Czech Republic). Due to the money required to file and register in these additional countries, Kevin doesn't recommend accepting this agreement.
Margins 101
Generally speaking, you'll experience higher sales and smaller margins in Europe and lower sales with higher margins in Canada. It's also important to remember that your U.S. strategy won't translate internationally. You must figure out if your products will sell in Canada or Europe.

Kohls is a great store to buy retail arbitrage especially on Nike and other shoes. In addition I also buy clothing and some home goods as well at Kohl's. I make Kohls and regular stop and use these steps to maximize my profits.
1. Tax Exemptions - Stop paying sales taxes at Kohls and save up to 13.5 percent depending on where you are shopping. You will need to have a registered business and signup for a sales tax and use number in your state to get this tax exemption. If you are not already registered search for "How to get a sales tax and use number in your state"
2. Kohl's Cash - Get $10 in Kohl's Cash for every $50 you spend and save it up to use to get maximum discounts on your next retail arbitrage purchases saving up to twenty percent. Make sure to use the cash though in the date range provided so you don't lose the free cash.
3. Yes2You Rewards - This is Kohl's rewards program that will allow you to gain one point for every dollar you spend and 100 points is worth $5 dollars that you can use towards future purchases thus allowing you to save an additional five percent.

Cash Is King
Businesses that fail during recessions are highly leveraged and swimming in debt. In emergencies like these, hold-off spending all your money on inventory so you can use cash on hand as a sail to weather you through the storm.
Shorten Your Stock
Because recessions mean slower sales, reduce your inventory. In times like these, product investments pose greater risks. To reduce risk, stay safe and trade inventory investments for cash cushions that will sustain you through slow seasons.
Target Essentials
No one is racing to Amazon for car accessories so shift your focus to food, medication, toilet paper, and other items that everyone needs regardless of their budget. This is also a great opportunity to open new accounts. Amidst an economic downturn, businesses are more open to Amazon sellers. Take advantage of the lower barriers to entry and show brands you're still in business!
Eliminate Unnecessary Expenses
Per Tip #1, now is the time to trade investments for cash. Avoid investing in software systems, courses, travel, and anything else that boosts your businesses' outflow. If there was ever a time to stay stingy, it's now.
Get Access To Capital
Even if you don't need credit now, banks are about to tighten the reins so grab a line of credit while it's still available and you'll at least have the option to use it further down the line. Also take advantage of government loans like these now that everyone's eager to help out businesses.
Focus On Your Strengths
Now is the time to stay in your lane, whether that be private label or wholesale. It's also important to emphasize your skills to suppliers desperate for sale-boosting services. If you're great at snagging discounts or profitable products, do more of that and save your bottom line. Use this time to hone your skillset and emphasize what separates you from the rest of the pack.
Negotiate
Everyone understands the hardships faced by small business owners during times like these. It's always smart to approach suppliers about temporary discounts on products and rent. Remember, if you never ask, the answer is always no.
Pay Your Debts
If you've got debt, you don't have cash on hand (see Tip #1). So pay it off and focus on earning cash cushions.
Know Your Numbers
If you don't have a professional bookkeeper, get one. If not, make sure your accounting is accurate. Otherwise, it's impossible to know what's hurting or helping your business's bottom line. If your profit margin or ROI is shrinking, it's time to switch your strategy, but if you don't have accurate profit or loss statements, you'll never know that change is needed.
Bonus Tip: Don't Quit Your Day Job
This one's pretty self-explanatory. Now more than ever, it's essential to have a safety net. As a rule of thumb, wait to quit your day job until your side hustle has secured you 3-6 months of savings and you can pay yourself.

Don't just survive the recession – help your business thrive in spite of an economic downturn! It sounds impossible, but if you follow these ten tips, you'll be swimming far ahead of the pack when waters inevitably return to normal.

Laser-Focused To The Power of Time
Do you feel like there's competition from all angles? Remember this: Amazon’s barrier to entry is ground-level but their barrier to success is sky-high. Only a fraction of sellers will become lucrative business-owners and the secret to success is focus. If your passion is wholesale, spend every day calling distributors.
Relationships Rule
Every new seller is overwhelmed by the prospect of establishing themselves. For success in sales, ditch your 400 emails per day and pick up the phone. Given that most sellers can't make it past a generic email, taking the initiative to call immediately sets you apart. Not to mention, most distributors pre-filter Amazon emails.
Nervous? Even if your first ten calls are a stumbling mess of rejection, the more you listen to a distributor's problems, the more you'll understand their needs and pitch solutions. Don’t let Amazon deter brands; emphasize your transparency and professional etiquette.
Above all, remember that brands are your clients. Focus on their needs and make them laugh! Likewise, ditch the anxiety. The very worst that can happen is an invisible stranger laughs and hangs up. You’ll survive.
