Highlights of the 2023 East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals In Trenton, NJ
2023 East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals at the Cure Insurance Arena in Trenton, NJ: We went to our first indoor auto race on Saturday February 25, 2023. Our good friend Al from Custom Built Products was sponsoring the race and invited us to come along. So, we decided to go and bring a few cameras. We didn’t know exactly what to expect from indoor car racing but this event surpassed any expectations we might have had. The cars were 600cc Micro Sprint cars and the track was clay. It was big fun, well run and safe for all the drivers and the fans alike. And enthralled with a new subject matter to shoot, we ended up capturing A LOT of footage. We’ve spent the last 2 weeks combing over it and now we proudly present the edited highlight of our night at the East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals at Cure Insurance Stadium in Trenton, NJ.
We had a great time and are already looking forward to go to our next indoor auto race. Thanks again Al!!!
Congratulations to the winner of the A-Main event, Tim Buckwalter. Here are the official results of the East Coast Indoor Dirt Nationals A-Main Event (50 Laps): 1. Tim Buckwalter, 2. Frozen Brake Caliper Tips
Some quick tips on diagnosing a frozen brake rotor and some important observations and advice about checking surrounding parts for heat damage after you discover a frozen brake rotor. The intense heat can do major collateral damage to neighboring parts, especially in the front suspension as evidenced in this video with a melted ball joint. Whenever a part of a car overheats, it’s a great idea to look around in the neighborhood for other parts that might have been affected by the heat. The safety of yourself or your customer depends on this kind of thoroughness. First comment gets a free Mechanic Secrets t-shirt. Just tell me your preferred shirt size in the comment, Anthony. The Easy Way To Break Any Lug Nut Loose [Remove Frozen Lug Nuts With No Special Tools]
The Easy Way To Break Any Lug Nut Loose [Remove Frozen Lug Nuts With No Special Tools]: Using the force of inertia from a spinning wheel, you can loosen lug nuts faster and with less effort than you may have realized. Not only is this easier than most lug nut loosening methods, but you can also remove even the most stubborn frozen lug nut with this method. And the best part is, there are no special tools required. All you need is a 1/2" drive breaker bar (mine is a 24” Matco) and an impact socket, properly sized for your lug nuts. I can’t stress enough to use a BREAKER BAR and not a ratchet and to use an IMPACT SOCKET and not a chrome socket. Although this method looks virtually effortless, there are incredible forces at work which will shatter a chrome socket and/or break a ratchet if you attempt this method with the wrong tools.
This is by far the easiest method to loosen a stuck lug nut. And, it's also the kindest method on your back. Once you master this technique, I promise you'll never bend over to loosen lug nuts again. What's not to like? It's easier on the body, faster and more effective than power tools, long pipes, etc.
This is a cool trick I learned from my first boss when I was 13 years old and have been using ever since. In my opinion, this trick should be taught to and practiced by all drivers before they need to change a tire. You can break free even the most stubborn lug nuts with the lug wrench and jack that come with your vehicle, if you know how to use them. But, how many of us have been stuck on the side of the road and unable to loosen an over-tightened lug nut? Who knew the solution was right there in our hands all along? Please share this video far and wide for the benefit of every driver.

Impossible Bolt Through Frame Install Trick - Ford F250 Snow Plow Bracket
Impossible Bolt Through Frame Install Trick - Great For Snow Plow, Trailer Hitch or Running Boards!
This is a handy trick to know if you ever have to add or replace a bolt through a vehicle’s frame in a spot that seems impossible to get the bolt to without removing parts. In this example scenario on a 2002 Ford F250 4x4, the snow plow bracket was missing a bolt. Normally, you’d have to remove the bumper to install this bolt but as demonstrated in this video, there is a tricky way to feed the bolt through the frame with wire that helps you avoid taking the bumper off. All it takes is a little bit of wire and the right technique, as you’ll see in the video. This trick can have a multitude of uses throughout a mechanic’s career for all sorts of installs. This trick can save you lots of time when installing snow plows, running boards, trailer hitches, etc.

Making A Mechanics Seat
Making A Mechanics Seat: I looked at mechanics seats/mechanics stools from all the major manufacturers; Snap-On, Kobalt, Torin, Omega, Craftsman, Harbor Freight, etc. and didn't find one that met my standards, so I decided to make my own. This is the story of how I built my mechanics seat and why and how I use it. Lots of fun cutting, welding and head scratching in this one. We hope you enjoy this video and will consider subscribing to help us continue bringing you more. And we'd love to hear your thoughts on mechanics stools, seats and creepers in the comments.

How To Launch A Cup with an Oxy-Acetylene Explosion
How To Launch A Cup with an Oxy-Acetylene Explosion: Well, we're closing out another year at the shop with a bang! This is a fun trick you can do with your oxy-acetylene torch and a paper cup. It’s one of those things you just assume everybody knows about but actually they don’t. So, for those that have never seen it, allow me to demonstrate how to launch a paper cup using an oxy-acetylene explosion from my torch gases. Definitely do not try this yourself and certainly do not use anything but a paper cup. An exploding cup made of material other than paper could be extremely hazardous.
Does anybody else have any fun oxy-acetylene torch suggestions/tricks? If so, leave them in the comments. We'd love to hear anything unusual you do with your torches.

Ulanzi WL-1 Wide Macro Lens Install on Sony ZV-1 (And bonus Lensmate removal)
Ulanzi WL-1 Wide Macro Lens Install on Sony ZV-1: Complete installation of the Ulanzi WL-1 lens kit onto a Sony ZV-1 camera. But first, we had to remove the Lensmate filter adapter that we installed in this previous episode: https://youtu.be/Bs9ap-ilTrs
After the Lensmate adapter is removed with the included handy removal tool, we install the mounting ring that comes with the Ulanzi wide angle lens and demonstrate the functionality of the various wide and macro lens configurations. The immediate impression is that the aluminum adapter ring provided by Ulanzi will hold a 52mm filter, or the wide angle lens, onto the ZV-1 much more securely that the Lensmate adapter kit.
In conclusion, our recommendation, if you want to add a filter to the lens of your Sony ZV-1, the 52MM adapter ring that comes with the Ulanzi WL-1 wide angle is far superior to the Lensmate filter adapter. The included Ulanzi adapter ring holds 52 mm filters, as well as, the wide angle lens much more securely than the Lensmate adapter would have. While we do think the Lensmate would do a fine job of simply holding filters on, if that's all you want to do, we didn’t feel the plastic Lensmate adapter was going to be strong enough to dependably hold on our wide-angle lens. So, since we plan on switching from 52mm filters to the wide angle lens and back and forth occasionally, we didn’t need the Lensmate at all because the Ulanzi kit comes with everything you need to add a removable 52mm filter or the wide-angle lens, depending on your shooting needs.
Link to purchase Ulanzi WL-1: https://amzn.to/3BUGPOg

Alternator Replacement Hack
Alternator Replacement Hack: Here’s a handy way to make room for a new alternator when the mounting collars are protruding out too far for the new one to fit. Most people are inclined to hit them with a hammer, which can technically work, but you risk breaking the very weak metal on the alternator mounting bracket. It can’t be overstated how easy it is to break the mount with a hammer. Which is why I came up with this alternate method to draw the collars back without risking damage. This was demonstrated on a 2008 Escalade but is applicable to almost every make and model of car and truck, with a few exceptions. Hope it helps!

2006 Audi A4 PCV Valve and Diaphragm Replacement - Check Engine Code P0171
2006 Audi A4 PCV Valve and Diaphragm Replacement - Check Engine Code P0171: This repair is on a 2006 Audi A4 2.0 Turbo, but other models will be similar. The P0171 code means that a vacuum leak exists near this side of the engine or there is a fuel delivery issue on the first bank of the engine. The first bank or bank 1 is usually located on the same side of the engine that contains cylinder number 1. A lean condition occurs when the engine either receives too little fuel or too much air. As you'll see in this video, trying to remove the oil cap with the car running revealed a very strong vacuum. This was our clue that the PCV valvle needed to be replaced. The entire diagnosis and repair procedure are included in this video.
Here is a link to order the PCV valve and gasket: https://amzn.to/3ybmke5
***Note: We are giving away a free Mechanic Secrets hat or T-shirt to anyone who can offer a suggestion on how to remove the plastic quick connect fittings that connect the hoses to the diaphragm assembly. The best answer in the comments will win their choice of a hat or t-shirt. We will message you for your choice of hat or t-shirt and size requirements. FYI, this section of the video can be found at 3:14. ***

How to Install the Lensmate Quick Change Filter Adapter on the Sony ZV-1 or RX100
How to Install the Lensmate Quick Change Filter Adapter on the Sony ZV-1 or RX100. This video is specifically focused on installing a Lensmate Quick Change Filter Adapter onto a Sony ZV-1 Camera.
Occasionally on Mechanic Secrets, we like to drive outside the lines of the automotive topic and share some things we learn in other areas of interest. One of those areas, as you might guess, is cameras. If you want to add a polarizer or ND filter to your Sony ZV1 or Rx100, this adapter allows you to attach any standard 52mm filter to the front of the camera, with the added benefit of protecting the factory lens from dust, debris and moisture. The full installation is demonstrated here, including an unexpected surprise at the end. Because of said surprise, we’re not sure if the Lensmate will be staying on the camera but we’re going to assess and report back in a future video. In the meantime, the factory lens will be protected by the UV filter, so we definitely achieved one of our goals with the Lensmate. Whether the Lensmate is the right solution for mounting the Ulanzi wide angle/macro lens remains to be seen. Stay tuned for an update once the Ulanzi arrives.

Acura RL Radiator Replacement
Acura RL Radiator Replacement: Timelapse video of entire job with important trouble-saving secrets about the job. This particular car is a 1998 Acura RL 3.5 with Auto and AC but most of the included secrets to the job apply to other years/models. The secrets contained in video are listed below, for your convenience:
-Use Extreme caution whenever working with hot engine coolant. Before starting, make sure the engine is cool to the touch. It’s also recommended to have a garden hose or 5 gallon bucket of cool water ready in case of burns from hot coolant.
-You do not need to remove the traction control unit or the throttle body. Only the top of the air box and air filter ( so it doesn't get wet with and coolant ) and first air inlet hose need to be removed.
-The fans will be easier to remove if you lift the power steering reservoir from the bracket and hold it aside.
Then you can slide fans toward the passenger side of car to get the fans out and up to remove. Both fans were removed via the passenger side of car.
-The bottom fan-to-radiator bolts will most likely break in the process of removing from these type of radiators. (open steel nut in molded plastic radiator tank with a steel bolt) Water plus salt plus steel = rust. These bolts are 6mm x 1 pitch, 16mm long with a small fender washer on them.
-Be careful with the length of the bolts when re-installing. Too long and they will puncture the plastic radiator tank. Look at the back side of the nut in relation to the tank as you tighten the bolt. If it touches the tank, remove and shorten bolt. Bolts should be just long enough to capture nut and tighten.
-When filling coolant let the fan cycle 2 or 3 times while monitoring engine temp with scan tool.( OBD2 or OEM ) ECT (electronic coolant temp) pid. That's my personal preferred method to monitor engine temp you can also look at the gauge in the car but it is not as accurate. And NEVER let a gasoline engine temp above 235f rad cap on and 208f rad cap off.

Garage Cleaning Secrets
Garage Cleaning Secrets: This is a typical shop cleaning session from my POV with a head-mounted GoPro, with some of my best garage cleaning tips and perks sprinkled in. A clean shop is a better place to work and better for customers too! Hopefully watching me clean can motivate you, if you've been putting it off.
Sadly, we lost our good friend Bill Adams over the winter. He was a wonderful, generous and knowledgeable man who will be missed for so many reasons. Not the least of which, is that he kept our shop super-clean. Now that duty falls to me. So, I squeeze in my cleaning where I can, usually in the early morning hours before the world wakes up. This video is a timelapse of what a typical shop clean up looks like. And you know, this might actually be a good YouTube to share with the ladies, if they’ve never seen a man actually clean something. A clean shop is a happy shop!!!

2008 BMW 528i 3.0 Engine Oil Filter Housing and Oil Cooler Gasket Replacement on N52 Engine
2008 BMW 528i Engine Oil Filter Housing and Oil Cooler Gasket Replacement on N52 Engine. This is complete, step by step instructions on how to remove and replace these gaskets on a BMW 3.0 N52 Engine. These gaskets are often the cause of oil leaks that can get oil on the drive belt, which if neglected can weaken the belt, which can break and in turn cause quite a bit of damage to your BMW engine. If your BMW has an oil leak, it's best to replace those gaskets now. In this demonstration, we show you how to replace the oil filter housing gasket and the oil cooler gasket on a 2008 BMW 528i 3.0, but the process will be very similar on any BMW with the N52 engine.

Making A Stainless Steel BBQ Grill
Making a stainless steel BBQ grill. By popular demand, here is the entire process of fabricating my stainless steel charcoal grill. I did this because I was unhappy with the poor quality of steel and stainless steel grills on the market and I needed a job I could do that would help me to learn to tig weld better, that was not for a customer. I attempted to document the entire process but the GoPro's don't always share the same work ethic as me, and decided not to work at certain times.
The box is constructed from 10 gauge 304 stainless steel. The grill grate is constructed from 1/2" and 3/8" 316 stainless dowel rods. The chimney is made from 2.5" x 2.5" 7 gauge ( 3/16) 304 stainless steel tube. It doesn't need to be that thick, it's just what I had on hand. The coal rack is made from 1"x1" 304 stainless steel angle. Chimney damper and draft air inlet adjustment control are made from 18/8 stainless steel with 1/4 20 x 1" bolts . And the grill grate slides are made from 3/4"x3/4" 304 stainless steel angle.
Learn how I light this grill in our other video on the All Natural Brazilian Charcoal Lighting Technique:
https://youtu.be/EFC_K02B18k
Tools Used:
-Welder: Miller Multimatic 215 with Tig Kit and the.
-Tig wire: 308 1/16 and 3/32 sizes
-Tig torch was using 3/32 red tungsten with #8 gas lens
-Plasma cutter: Hypertherm 45XP.
-Cordless angle grinders: 18volt Ridgid 4.5 inch.
-Corded angle grinder: Milwaukee 4.5 inch variable speed
-Bench grinder: 8 inch Jet 3/4 hp
-Circle burner Kit: Hypertherm
-Metal cutting chop saw: 14 inch with 14" Fein slugger with stainless (green) carbide blade
-Air compressor: Eastwood Elite QST 30/60 scroll compressor
-Die grinder: Fein with carbide burs
-Band files: Milwaukee
-Wheelbarrow: Jackson (Blue)
Fun fact: The lid is so sneaky heavy that most people think there is some kind of lock on it when they try to open it for the first time. No lock, just the weight of all that sweet, sweet stainless steel.

Olive Oil Hand Washing
Olive Oil Hand Washing. We're betting a lot of mechanics have never thought about, or tried, this very effective method of getting grease off their hands. Mechanics are bombarded with toxic chemicals all day long. Any reduction in exposure is a potential win for your long-term health. But, don't take our word for it, try it for yourself and let us know in the comments if it worked as well for you as it does for us. And if you're going to implement this method permanently, we highly encourage the use of a spray bottle for the olive oil. This will greatly reduce waste/spillage of the olive oil.
Also, be sure check out our video on olive oil charcoal grill lighting, that inspired this discovery:
