Join us as we examine the incredible benefits of radical unschooling for families, relationships, and personal growth.

E3 - Unraveling the Web of Meaning: Jeremy Lent on Love, Kindness, and Personal Growth
Can you imagine the profound impact of searching for meaning in the midst of a life crisis? Join us as we speak with Jeremy Lent, author of "The Patterning Instinct" and "The Web of Meaning," about his personal journey of enlightenment and understanding.
I met Jeremy when I worked as Interim CEO for the NGO Gaia Education. I was introduced to Jeremy through a fellow friend Daniel Christian Wahl, whom I also met through Gaia Education.
After my first meeting with Jeremy, I was left with a feeling of being humble. Here I was, in the room with a great thinker with a mind you want to dive into. I can listen to Jeremy talk for hours. The result of the meeting ended on a professional level with becoming a new Gaia Education program - and I knew I wanted more time together with Jeremy. So when we started our podcast, Jeremy was among the first people I wanted us to talk to.
I can highly recommend his books: "The Patterning Instinct: A Cultural History of Humanity’s Search for Meaning" and "The Web of Meaning: Integrating Science and Traditional Wisdom to Find Our Place in the Universe."
They are profound and deep and leave you with several aha moments. To me, one of the thoughts that affected me most strongly was his comment that: "The first thing that humans domesticated was themselves"...
In this podcast episode we explore the evolution of meaning-making in human history, the consequences of living in a disconnected society, and the power of love, kindness, and transformation in promoting change and healing.
We dive into the cognitive shifts that occurred as humans transitioned from a nomadic hunter-gatherer existence to a more sedentary agricultural lifestyle and discuss the importance of connectedness, community, and kindness in finding meaning in our lives. As we discuss the implications of the ecological crisis on our civilization, Jeremy shares his insights on hope for a better future and how to begin healing from the deep-rooted conditioning we experience from a young age.
Finally, we explore the Deep Transformation Network and the importance of taking responsibility for our actions and choices as we strive for a more connected and meaningful existence.
This episode is an insightful and inspiring exploration of the search for meaning, the power of kindness, and the potential for profound personal and societal transformation.
Don't miss out on this opportunity to learn from Jeremy Lent's wisdom and experiences.
About Jeremy Lent

As Sandra Says: "Unschoolers need a holiday. When people ask if they homeschool in the summer, they say yes. When people ask when they have a break from learning, they say never. This has gone on for a long time now. July 24 is Learn Nothing Day—a vacation for unschoolers."
We loved our first episode with Sandra Dodd so much that we promised each other to continue our talk in another episode. So here we are. This episode, besides talking about Learn Nothing Day, tackles the topic of unschooling and parental judgment. Sandra shares her experiences and insights, offering valuable advice on how to guide and coach your kids without imposing your own biases. We discuss the importance of teaching children crucial life skills and fostering an environment that promotes natural learning.
Our chat with Sandra Dodd is more than just an exchange of ideas; it's a journey through personal experiences, shared struggles, and triumphant breakthroughs. Whether you're a parent, a homeschooler, or simply curious about the art of communication, unschooling, and parenting, this episode is a must-listen.
It's an invitation to reflect, question, and perhaps see things from a different perspective – one that could better serve you and your family. So, come, join our conversation, and let's explore together. And see if you can take just one day of learning nothing :)

Pat was an integral part of John Holt's organization, Growing Without Schooling, which provided resources and support for parents interested in unschooling.
After John Holt passed away in 1985, Pat Farenga continued publishing the Growing Without Schooling magazine. A magazine he today is re-editing into books, so the many great stories of how you can live a life without school are available for even more people.
In this engaging conversation, we explore the challenges and rewards of homeschooling and unschooling, as well as the societal implications of these alternative approaches. Learn how to balance personal passions, family responsibilities, and social expectations.
We hope this episode will help you to reflect on your own educational experiences and explore the vast possibilities of alternative education.

E18 - Ask Us Anything: Embracing Radical Parenting & Unschooling: A Journey of Trust & Empowerment
What does it truly mean to embrace radical parenting and homeschooling?
This week - we are the “guests” on our own podcast.
Katrina Bieler contacted us with a kind letter, and we said yes, asking us if she could ask us all her questions.
“Dear Cecilie & Jesper...
I want to thank you for your podcast. I am homeschooling my own children and feel a constant need to do so from the deepest truths, or I find myself in the false position of thinking of them as empty boxes I must fill with the "right" stuff. Your podcast, which is essentially listening to people discuss deep truths as they have discovered them inside of experience and attempted to remain true and abide by what they have seen, refreshes me again and again. I end up with a joyful feeling and enlivened after listening.
I would love to interview both of you sometime, as a homeschooler behind you on the path with many questions…”
We said yes :)
In our conversation, we delve into the importance of recognizing the inherent goodness of children and how this perspective can shift our values as parents.
We discuss the dangers of a school system that measures a child's worth by their accomplishments, as well as the challenges and rewards of homeschooling.
We hope our experiences will inspire you to reevaluate your own parenting journey and empower you to make radical choices for your family's well-being.
We also explore the concept of unschooling and the role of family values in our decision-making process. Addressing themes of forgiveness and understanding, we reflect on how our past experiences can shape our relationships with our children and our approach to education.
Join us in this insightful and heartwarming episode as we celebrate the power of radical parenting and homeschooling.
And thank you, Katrina, for all the great questions. It was a pleasure to be “on the other side of the mic.”
We want to do this again, so feel free to contact us if you are ready to ask us a lot of questions - we are ready to answer them - here on our podcast!

Ever dreamt of packing up your life and traveling the world? That’s exactly what our guest, Rachel Carlson, and her family did. Rachel shares her family's exhilarating journey of full-time travel, encapsulating the beauty of stepping away from conventional norms to embrace a world brimming with adventures.

E6 - The Psychology of Play: Peter Gray on the Benefits of Free Play for Children
What if your child could thrive outside the traditional school system, learning self-direction and social skills through play and exploration?
Peter Gray is such a clear voice regarding understanding the power of unschooling and playing as a tool for learning. As a long-time researcher of learning, Peter knows what he talks about. His blog, Freedom to Learn, is an excellent resource for all parents, and his articles are among the ones I see myself sharing repeatedly. We have for a long time wanted to talk with Peter and are happy to here share with you our dialogue with him.
In our conversation with Peter Gray, we discuss the challenges of finding a social life for homeschooled children, especially in Europe. Peter shares his insights on the importance of age-mixed groups, the history of childhood, and the difficulties modern families face in building a community for their kids.
Libraries and after-school play programs present unique opportunities for homeschooled children to socialize and grow. Peter's research on libraries as social hubs for kids reveals that many institutions even cater specifically to homeschooling families. We also discuss Let Grow, a nonprofit working with schools to provide after-school play, and compare European school systems with their emphasis on balance between education and playtime.
Reimagining education means rethinking the adult role in children's lives.
We dive into the concept of "No Rules School" in New Zealand and the surprising benefits of minimal adult intervention, such as reduced bullying and increased empathy. ‘
Peter also shares his thoughts on how homeschooling and self-directed education can offer solutions for improving the current school system.
Don't miss this thought-provoking conversation with Peter Gray, as we explore the potential for a brighter future in education.
About Dr. Peter Gray
Dr. Peter Gray is a highly regarded researcher, psychologist, and advocate for the unschooling movement. He is best known for his book "Free to Learn," which explores the benefits of self-directed learning and the drawbacks of traditional schooling.
As a professor of psychology at Boston College, Dr. Gray has spent his career studying how children learn and develop. He is particularly interested in the role of play in children's education and has written extensively on the subject.
In addition to his academic work, Dr. Gray is a vocal advocate for unschooling, an educational approach emphasizing learner autonomy and self-directed learning. He believes that children learn best when allowed to pursue their interests and passions rather than being forced to conform to a standardized curriculum.
Through his research and advocacy, Dr. Gray has become a leading voice in the unschooling movement, inspiring parents and educators alike to rethink traditional approaches to education and embrace more child-centered, individualized learning experiences.
