This SLOPED MEADOW Never Got Seeded — Ep. 215
Back in 2021 when we were tackling the big job of cleaning out the old nursery area to turn it into an insect meadow—there were certain sloped areas, particularly near the Meadow House and around the ponds—that never got dealt with because the tractor couldn't work on the slopes. Now we're coming up with a plan to manage these areas, so that's what I'll take you through today.

Making a RAISED GARDEN BED + TRELLIS for Home Exterior — Ep. 207
We're nearing the completion of the Meadow Home—(we project another 3-4 weeks or so)—and one of the big outstanding items we'd like to accomplish is building a raised garden bed and trellis system for the eastern side of the Meadow House. This took some critical thinking in advance because we were about to pour the concrete patio, and wanted to make sure that it didn't drain onto the patio, and had more stone drainage below it. We'll show you how we thought about the design, construction, and the process of assembling it on this new renovation.

All About NATIVE PLANT PLUGS — Ep. 202
Since we've gotten here at Flock, we've placed a big emphasis on native plants to our state and ecoregion. Though we have some excellent native plant nurseries in the area—they don't grow every variety and they often don't sell plants as plugs. Plugs are essentially young plants that are two to eight months old and have a range of benefits—one being economical.
I'll take you through the ins and outs of plug planting and special thanks to Izel Plants for providing a clearinghouse of native plants to homeowners throughout the United States.

Create a FOUR-SEASON GARDEN Bed: Color All Year Round — Ep. 200
We introduced the 'Yellow Garden' a couple weeks ago on this channel, and I finally got a second wind to begin putting together an exciting plant palette, which will turn this garden into MORE than a 'Yellow Garden' and one that not only has continued 4-season interest, but hues of yellows, oranges, rusty reds, purples, and blues. We see this as a garden that will connect the color ways of all the surrounding landscape and gardens, so choosing plants feels more intentional. Enjoy the planting!

It's been perfect weather for some summertime projects, so we decided we would have a couple days of do-it-yourself builds and restoration, including the designing and making of a bucket bench for the front porch of the Meadow House; the restoration of a wrought iron table that I picked up from the local auction for an absolute steal; and upcycling some of the cherry butcher block from the Meadow House countertop into 3 cutting boards.

Big Plans for WEEDY GARDENS: Progress Tour — Ep. 193
The garden that we colloquially refer to as the 'Yellow Garden' is going to get an overhaul this year because we never really quite got around to planning, designing, or managing it. It's an exciting project because it'll eventually be linked to the Memorial Garden on the other side, which is much more well-maintained—(except for some parts). Stay tuned here because we'll have updates as fall rolls around.

Planting ROSES, CLEMATIS, & LONG BEANS on Gazebo — Ep. 188
All the planters in the gazebo are accounted for after today—with a honeysuckle 'Kintzley's Ghost', Sander's White Rambler rose, Red Chinese Noodle Beans, and two different clematis. These won't be the final planters they are in, but they may be the ones that we have for the year. Whether we take these planters in a more protected space for the winter—we'll determine when we cross that bridge!

Finally Planting the GAZEBO 'Trellis' — Ep. 187
I couldn't even wait for the official planting season to get the gazebo started with some plants. One of the qualities I loved most about this gazebo was that it could also serve as a trellis. And the first plant that I chose to plant is a Lonicera reticulata 'Kintzley's Ghost' honeysuckle vine. It's a vining honeysuckle that is native to the more western parts of the United States, but this cultivar reminds me more of a climbing eucalyptus. It gets the most beautiful blue color with tiny yellow flowers that are a pollinator magnet during the late half of spring and early part of summer.
Stay tuned because I'll be planting the rest of this up now that the summer is upon us!
Special thanks to @EspomaOrganic for partnering with us on this video and providing awesome products for organic gardeners.

UNDERGROUND GREENHOUSE Update — Ep. 186
We highlighted Scott and Crystal Van Gaasbeck from Under the Tree Farms' underground, sunken greenhouse and this time we wanted to see how it held up during the growing season—plus they were seedling-sitting for us while we were away!

Man Turns His FARM to a 1,100+ PERSON BIOPHILIC COMMUNITY — Ep. 185
Steve and Marie Nygren bought a farm 25 minutes out of Atlanta, GA for their family to enjoy, but as rampant, unstructured development nipped at the heels of the surrounding land, Steve went on a long, tireless journey to figure out the best models to develop land responsibly while saving the majority as farm, field or forest. He realized that the key to conservation—at least in that area—could be through responsible development—and began looking at all the key qualities that would make an area enjoyable to live and interact with. He later turned his family's 900-acre farm into a biophilic community and convinced hundreds of local landowners to found a new city over 40,000 acres. This is Serenbe's story.

Planting Anemone coronaria 'Mr. Fokker' — Ep. 139
After planting Anemone coronaria 'Mr. Fokker' in the Memorial Garden last year, I decided I'd get three dozen more to plant throughout and potentially lift them in the winter. They are supposedly not hardy to Zone 5/6, which is where I am. It was, however, a warm winter, so I was surprised to see last year's plants emerge this year—and quite early at that! The ones I planted this year also came up slightly earlier than expected, which just goes to show you—you can't predict the weather!

Why HEMLOCK TREES Are Dying and What to do to SAVE THEM — Ep. 179
Though we did a couple walk-throughs with foresters through our woods, none of us initially saw that our hemlock had been infested with the dreaded hemlock woolly adelgid, Adelges tsugae, a xylem-sucking invasive insect native to Asia, which entered into the United States through Japanese Tsuga (hemlock) in the nursery trade.
Now that we know we have hemlock woolly adelgid (HWA), we brought in some folks working on the intiative in New York State (and in other states), to share what they know about the adelgid lifecycle, what to look out for, and best practices for private landowners. We had a lot of difficulty finding out what to do about HWA—even with all the free resources out there for the public, so we hope this video will explicate some of the options that are out there.
If you’d like to get the free resource for hemlock woolly adelgid licensed applicators in NYS, head over to our website at: https://www.flockfingerlakes.com/ —click on “Learn” in the main menu bar, and go from there.
