The Sámi have an oral tradition of pass their history on to future generations through stories of their life. My father passed his oral history on to me by recording the tales of his life onto cassette tapes. I am now passing on this collection through his voice and video. The stories are spoken in his voice in the Finnish language. Episode Summary: In this first episode, my father is born in 1906 in the Kola Peninsula. His mother was a North Sámi, born in Vadso Norway. His father dies on the same night that he is born. His mother returns to Petsamo (now Pechenga). In 1908 Skolt Sámi relocate to live in Petsamo. Guovsssahas is the North Sámi word for Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis. The colour blends that I create reflect the colours of the sky - Rainbows and Northern Lights. For most of my hand spun yarns - I like to give them a test drive to see how the colours look when knit. Are the colours harmonious? Is the yarn well spun and a pleasure to knit with? I will later combine the samples into a throw - for myself.
