By burying drain pipes underground we can collect the ambient stable temperature of the earth and move that cold air in summer and warmer air in winter up into the greenhouse to stabilize that temperature during extreme seasonal weather. Luckily, being in Central Texas, we do not have to deal with desert heat or hard-core snow... so this shallow geothermal system should be just fine.

Just walking around the land to show the relationships of where things are AND mainly to document where we are now so we can remember where we came from when everything gets built out! Also, looking inside one of the rock buildings from the 1800s.

We have used this technique before. You can plant more than one tree in a single plant hole. it is actually better than the typical 'fruit salad' grafting style of getting multiple fruits from an area. In this case the trees are pruned as a single plant and grow symbiotically.

Hugel Culture or more properly... Hügelkultur... is a permaculture technique for gardening. A mound is constructed from decaying wood debris and other compostable biomass plant materials and planted as a raised bed.

Now that we have been here over a year and have the 1800s rock room up and running... and are starting to actually work on building things, it is fun to look back at our initial first boho campout: living in a tent and the stealth van (not so stealth here) and having the outdoor kitchen, etc.

The Mermaid Club in Johnson City, TX was opened in the 1960s and we believe survived until the 1970s. It burned down sometime in the 1970s. If you have any information about it, please let us know. We would like to have pictures and stories and pay tribute to the history of what was here as much as possible.

A few thoughts, observations and tips on our first concrete pour day.

As we peel back the layers on the property we find treasures, like the paint remnants of a place where a lot of folks had fun - the Mermaid Club.

We go to a fireplace store where there are literally piles and piles of free wood palettes. Many you have to pick through, but there are solid 2x4s and even 2x6s in the mix, perfect for our many projects we have in mind.

Watch as a Chicken Snake or Rat Snake - this friendly large non-venomous snake slides easily up a tree. The other sound you here is not a rattler, but insects in the trees.

When we first landed on on the Land we broke out a version of Bing Crosby singing Deep in the Heart of Texas. Just sharing a silly moment of sheer joy!
