Here is a trick I thought of to accomplish this important adjustment quickly without a dial indicator. If I thought of something for sure it's well known among those smarter than I but just in case here it is.

Here is some English Oak Burl which many wouldn't even consider using in a pool cue but sealing even distressed burls like this isn't all that difficult. I used 5 minute epoxy so it would fill the voids and stay in place.
