May 2021 - Back to the Future with Temporal Tables by Randolph West (@_randolph_west)
Abstract:
Back to the Future is the greatest time travel movie ever. I'll show you how temporal tables work, in both SQL Server and Azure SQL Database, without needing a DeLorean. We cover point in time analysis, reconstructing state at any time in the past, recovering from accidental data loss, calculating trends, and my personal favorite: auditing. There's even a bit of In-Memory OLTP. This is a demo-heavy session.

March 2021 - Spark and Databricks in Azure Synapse by Ginger Grant (@desertislesql)
Abstract:
Azure Synapse Workspace provides the ability to use both Apache Spark and Databricks. Which one should you use? The answer of course is “It Depends”. In this session we are going to review what the use cases are which would determine why you would select one tool over another. Here we will examine the costs, the kind of data being analyzed, how much data is processed, variability of data loads, and other variables which determine which solution should be implemented. This session will also review when a Spark based processing tool should be used and when you are better off another tool such as SQL on-demand or an Extract, Load and Transform (ELT) process. The demos will show how to implement each solution in the Azure Synapse Workspace and how each can be used to process data.
About Ginger
Ginger Grant is a Principal Consultant in Advanced Analytics. She manages the consultancy Desert Isle Group and shares what she has learned while working with data technology to people around the world.

February 2021 - PowerApps and Artificial Intelligence by Jeremy Frye (@SQLBInstein)
Abstract:
The Microsoft Power Platform has become an innovative bridge between data interaction, visualization and analytics. The possibilities have become almost endless for businesses to engage with their data in amazing ways.
In this session, I will show you an application using Power Apps and location services to track latitude and longitude coordinates on Bing maps. Attendees will learn how to configure and use the application on a mobile device. I will also show two approaches using AI within the application by using Azure SQL Database, Cognitive Services and Power Automate.
An end-user will be able to leverage Bing Search for location-aware web searches while an administrator will be able to leverage the Azure SQL Database and Power Automate to send alerts based on predefined metrics.

December 2020 session - PolyBase - It's what's for dinner by Michael Wall (@MichaelDWall1)
PolyBase is Microsoft’s great new replacement to linked servers. With the current version in SQL Server 2019, one can connect to multiple data sources such as Teradata, Apache, Hadoop, Oracle, and many many more. We will review best practices for setting up PolyBase and its Scale-Out groups as well as showing how it interacts in an Always On Availability Group. When Scaling-Out (up!), PolyBase is able to work harder and deliver more data. What happens when one of its node disappears? We will have a live demo demonstrating how to manage the Scale-Out group when bad things happen. In addition, the DMVs for managing PolyBase will be reviewed, and finally, there will be results of the impact of using multiple nodes in the Scale-Out group on the PolyBase queries!
Prerequisites: Basic database administration skills/knowledge of HA concepts
About Michael
Michael Wall has been an IT professional going back to when he had his own software store and worked with his customers with their “dose” problems. Originally hired by a small consulting firm to write web pages, he was thrust into the SysAdmin world when their lead consultant changed the passwords of all of the servers at a major pulp and paper company’s systems to 100%s$%t and walked out the door. He was sent down with a copy of UNIX for Dummies and 50 cents for the bus ride back. Fast forward a few years, he was asked if he wanted to be a DBA after successfully managing a fifty server Y2K upgrade. Since then, he’s never looked back and has survived a number of data and system challenges.

December 2018: Partitioned views by Rick Lowe
Why should I care about ... partitioned views by Rick Lowe (@DataFLowe)
Partitioned tables are awesome and partitioned views are dead, right? Well, sure partitioned views are not sexy but there are still plenty of applications where they are critical. And not necessarily just for standard edition who aren’t on the new service pack yet. If your data is time stamped, do you see different queries run against older data than new data? Do you with you could segment your data across multiple columns? Do you have data you need to partition horizontally? It’s possible partitioned views may still be for you. Come hear why this is still an important topic long after cargo pants and trucker hats went away … and possibly even after 2016 SP1.
About Rick:
Rick is a Microsoft Certified Master with more than 15 years of experience working with SQL Server. He currently works as an independent performance DBA/Developer for clients across the USA and Canada. He started his career as a database developer, but over time became more and more interested in how the database engine operated ... eventually becoming more focused on operational and performance issues than code.
Rick will work with all things relational, but most enjoys helping smaller companies get better performance from MSSQL, as well as smoothing over relationships between DBA and development teams.

October 2019 - Using Columnstore indexes in AzureDevOps by Konstantin Kosinsky (@kkosinsky)
Abstract:
The Analytics service in Azure DevOps Services provides all-over insights to your DevOps data: work item tracking, CI/CD pipelines, testing process, etc.
Built on top of columnstore indexes, the Analytics service has to deal with 100s of millions of records and daily growth in 10s of millions, only a few minutes delay from operation store, sub-second query performance for in-product experiences as well as 3rd party extensions, Power BI integration and ad-hoc queries.
Working on it, I've learned a lot of DOs and DON'Ts about columnstore indexes. The session covers how to:
* partition columnstore indexes in a multitenant environment
* maintain columnstore indexes in case of updates and/or purge to keep segment elimination possible
* evolve database schema without downtimes and maintenance windows
* design to benefit from predicate and aggregation pushdown
* deal with edge case like ad-hoc queries for raw data and paging
* choose between CCI and NCCI based on usage patterns
About Konstantin:
Konstantin is an industry expert who loves optimizing the performance at least in 10x. More data - more fun.
Konstantin is a Principal Software Engineer at Azure DevOps Services, where he works on moving the Analytics for software engineering to a completely new level.
Konstantin was born and had been working in Ukraine for a long time, passionately sharing his knowledge with Ukrainian and other European data communities. Before joining Microsoft in 2012, he was a Data Platform MVP for many years.
