It's a special place and usually off limits. The back rooms and areas of the Buffalo Museum of Science are kept under lock and key and for good reason. Back there, away from the public view, you will find thousands of unusual treasures. Director of collections, Kathy Leacock knows here way around back here. Our first stop is a room filled with dead things in bottles. Kathy says "this is our fluid preserved collection, we keep our items by material type" and adds "this is an example of a collection that we don't exhibit, we use for research." Our next stop is a room where Kathy shows the "Knox Money Collection". Unusual objects cover the large table as Kathy explains that before we had standardized currency, almost everything could be used for a form of payment including: tobacco, cheese, salt, hair and liquor. Other treasuresin this behind-the-scenes tour include artifacts from the Pan-American Exhibition, a two headed calf and a large taxidermy tiger named "Tony". A special kind of scenery magic has arrived at Buffalo's Kavinoky Theatre in the form of LED screens . The new screens were purchased through a grant for $47,000 and according to Managing Director Loraine O'Donnell the new technology will be "a game changer for the Kavinoky." The screens can be used in sections or all in one piece and can be programed to project anything. For their current production of "Mamma Mia!" the screens can easily project a beach seen and nightmare sequence as well as a more than a dozen other backgrounds. Loraine says that "this is the same kind of technology that you have seen in at rock concerts and these screens have been used in theatre in Europe for more than a decade". O'Donnell who also appears in the productions says that the screens will not detract from the performance, but will enhance the production which runs through January 28th. It's a sweet spot in the Southern Tier. It began in the early 80's when Andy Schultz's grandfather discovered an old cider press. "My grandfather saw it in an old barn in Buffalo and decided to bring it home and set it up." Andy says. Andy started helping his grandfather with the cider business and now two decades later has taken over the operation. Andy explains "he decided to retire and I'm going to keep it going hopefully." The centerpiece of this cider operation an antique press that dates back to 1890. It's over a hundred years old and still does what it was designed to do, make cider. There's just one catch, the press is very loud. Andy says it makes a lot of noise because it's old, adding "the gears make a lot of noise when they're running." The fresh squeezed cider goes into a holding tank and then goes through a UV process that kills all of the bacteria. The process is topped up the old fashioned way with Andy bottling the cider by hand. Started by his grandfather, Andy hopes to keep this tasty Southern Tier tradition going for a long time to come. Busti Cider Mill is located about 80 miles south of Buffalo at 1135 Southwestern Drive, Jamestown, N.Y.

GREAT VALLEY, N.Y. (WKBW) - It seems to magically appear about this time each year. Pumpkinville is a Southern Tier tradition. Dan Pawlowski and his wife Diane took over two decades ago and they have kept some of the old favorite features like "Pesky the Talking Pumpkin" and added plenty of new attractions, too. Sure, some folks prefer to just pick out pumpkins. Others make it an all day affair, enjoying the live animals, the food and fun kid-friendly jumping pillows. They now make their own cider and fresh baked goods on site. Open seven days a week through October 31st, with free admission and free parking. You can check them out on line.
