Mary O'Connell is live at Hudson Beach in Pasco County, where people are taking in their last moments before the storm heads toward the coast and they hunker down. Some homes in the area have been boarded up, and boats pulled out of the water in preparation. Residents say they've stocked up on supplies in case they lose power.

TRACKING IDALIA | Governor DeSantis provides latest on state preps for Hurricane Idalia

Hurricane Idalia is now a Category 2 hurricane, with forecasters expecting part of the Gulf Coast of Florida to experience storm surge and hurricane conditions Tuesday night into Wednesday. At 5 p.m. Tuesday, Idalia was located about 195 miles southwest of Tampa. The system had sustained winds of 100 miles an hour with higher gusts and was moving to the north at 16 miles per hour.

Hillsborough County has issued a mandatory evacuation order for Evacuation Zone A, as well as those in mobile and manufactured homes and residents in low-lying areas prone to flooding, beginning at 2 p.m. today, Monday, Aug. 28.   Visit HCFLGov.net/StaySafe for details about Hillsborough County's evacuation zones and additional storm preparation information. ABC Action News visited numerous gas stations on Monday afternoon. There was a constant flow of cars at the Walmart gas station off North Dale Mabry Highway in Tampa near Interstate 275.

Governor Ron DeSantis announced the suspension of tolls along Florida’s west coast in preparation for Tropical Storm Idalia.

It’s a bitter irony. Aaron Hefty makes his living on the water. “Some of the best fishin’ in Ozello is out my back door,” said the charter boat captain who runs Hefty’s Ozello Adventures. But now, it’s the water threatening to injure his livelihood. He and roughly 600 other full-time residents live in Ozello, a remote chain of islands surrounded by the Gulf of Mexico in Citrus County. The community is particularly vulnerable as Idalia approaches because of its isolated geography.
