According to the defense attorneys, the prosecutors did not reveal that the lead detective in the rapper’s double-murder case had been previously accused of being willing to lie as he gathered evidence. On Tuesday, attorneys for the rapper requested for the hearing to be rescheduled for Wednesday, as one of the defense attorneys was reportedly in the hospital. Attorneys for Melly, whose legal name is Jamell Demons, on Friday asked Broward Circuit Judge John J. Murphy to remove the Broward State Attorney’s Office from the case and potentially dismiss it entirely. Jury selection in the retrial of the 24-year-old rapper was set to start this week, but the judge pushed it back a week on Friday and set hearings to deal with the obstruction allegations. The request from the defense attorneys comes after Assistant State Attorney Michelle Boutros, who works for the Broward office, testified Friday that she overheard Miramar Police Detective Mark Moretti, lead investigator in the case against Demons, ask a Broward County deputy to lie about being present when Moretti executed a search warrant outside his jurisdiction last October, forcibly seizing a phone from Demons' mother as part of a witness tampering investigation. Defense attorney Jamie Benjamin said that information should have been turned over to the defense because they could have used it to discredit Moretti during Demons’ recent murder trial, which ended in July with a hung jury. Here we go again! Amber Heard on the witness stand LYING on her ex-husband Johnny Depp! This cross-examination will be ruthless! For context: The defamation case brought by actor Johnny Depp against his ex-wife Amber Heard is ongoing and will likely take weeks to conclude. But what preceded the case? Depp and Heard's relationship began more than a decade ago, and eventually devolved into what appears to have been a toxic marriage. The couple split in 2016, but have continued to battle in court over an op-ed Heard wrote for The Washington Post in 2018, in which she described surviving domestic violence -- without mentioning Depp by name. Depp is suing for $50 million in damages and denies ever being physically violent with Heard. Heard is countersuing for $100 million and claims she was only ever violent with Depp in self-defense or defense of her younger sister. As the case plays out, social media has become a frenzy, devouring sound bites, evidence and clips of the courtroom. Federal judge agrees with @cardib and destroys Tasha K's @unwinewithtashak bankruptcy petition, financial life! 20-year attorney reviews Cardi B's attorneys' motions and the judge's ultimate ruling! Context: Tasha K reportedly took another loss in court this week. A federal court judge shot down the YouTube personality’s bankruptcy claims and ordered her to pay Cardi B the $4 million settlement she won in her defamation case. Tasha K filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in a Florida court last June. As part of the requirement to file for bankruptcy, she was forced to list some of her assets, which included a Chevrolet Silverado worth $46,000, furniture worth $2,750, clothes totaling $2,500 and $95 in a Chase account. Tasha allegedly owes an unknown amount of debt in back taxes to the IRS and $6,000 to American Express. Her other debts include an unknown amount of legal fees, $3,000 to Bank of America and $5,000 to Discover Bank. Tasha and her partner, who call themselves content creators, earn about $30,000 a month. Cardi B filed a lawsuit against Tasha K in 2019 after she said she posted multiple videos making false accusations about her. The court ultimately ruled Tasha was liable for defamation, invasion of privacy and intentional infliction of emotional distress. Tasha pointed out she doesn’t have money to pay the debt, but Cardi B still wants her to cough it up. Tasha K filed an appeal after she was ordered to pay but she lost it when the court determined she didn’t provide sufficient evidence to prove how there was an error in the trial. “Defendant asks for a new trial, saying that there was insufficient evidence for the jury verdict against her,” the appeals court said at the time. “But as she all but admits, she didn’t make either of the required post-verdict motions in the district court. She never tells us where in the 5500-page record the district court’s alleged errors can be found. Because Kebe’s brief falls well short of what we require, she has abandoned this argument.” Tasha K later apologized to Cardi B after losing her appeal in March, saying, “We lost the appeal against Cardi B sad day. But I’m gonna be alright. I appreciate all your love [and] support. Throughout this fight. Today we throw in the white flag. What happened will never happen again. The two had a prenuptial agreement that he expects will be enforced, according to the filing. YNW Melly's Attorney Makes POWERFUL Opening Analogy to explain reasonable doubt! Context of case: One day into rapper YNW Melly’s double murder trial in Broward County, Florida, and all indications point to a contentious, knock-down, drag-out courtroom battle between the defense and the state. Melly, whose given name is Jamell Demons, is a 24-year-old member and co-founder of the YNW Collective. He stands accused of two counts of murder for the 2018 shooting and killing of his friends, and fellow collective members, Chris Thomas, 20, who was known as YNW Juvy, and Anthony Williams, 21, who was known as YNW Sakchaser. Prosecutor Kristine Bradley claimed the defendant himself actually bragged about and admitted to the deadly shootings in a direct message on Instagram. In the immediate aftermath of the violence, people were checking to make sure Melly wasn’t also hurt, she said. One direct message allegedly received by Melly asked: “Yo, homie. You good? Let me know something.” The state claims the rapper “succinctly” replied: “I did that. Shh.” Defense attorney David A. Howard sought to cast the state’s investigatory efforts as haphazard and their case as full of holes. “Prosecutors are given great power, endless resources to perform their mission of pursuing justice, but that’s not what occurred here,” Howard said. “What they will bring you is a case that is riddled with reasonable doubt, that is founded on an incompetent and incomplete investigation and exercised poor judgment at every turn. The state cannot prove beyond a reasonable doubt the allegations they have made, and there’s a reason for that.” Howard said the co-defendant in the case, Cortlen Henry, known as YNW Bortlen, repeatedly lied about the shooting to police and had gunshot residue on his hands – whereas his client had been honest. “There’s a difference between cases that are investigated and cases that are fabricated. When a case is investigated, the state uses all its resources – its investigators, its experts, and all its energy – to identify leads and run them to ground. When a case is fabricated, first a target is chosen and then the state uses all its resources – its investigators, its experts, and its energy – to run that target into the ground.
