Legacy Conversations – SADF – Rear Admiral (JG) A.G. Söderlund, SA Navy Retired (Episode 3)
Born in Kimberley in the Northern Cape in May 1948, Arnè (Angel) Söderlund was educated at Christian Brothers College in Kimberley where he matriculated in 1965. He joined the SA Navy (Permanent Force) as a seaman in early 1966 and in April of the same year was selected for officer training and commissioned in 1970. He served until 2006 and played a major role in the navy. His lists of achievements are long and distinguished.
In this episode, the third, he tells us about the SA Navy strike craft operations. They were the premier surface warfare vessels at the time. Captain Jacques du Toit speaks to us about his time in the South African Air Force (SAAF). Coming from a military family, he did his national service as a dog handler in the SA Air Force. He then joined permanently becoming an Electronic Warfare – EW – or EO – officer flying in the DC-4 (Spook), Boeing 707-C, and Oryx helicopters (airborne jammers).

He also shares his experiences training with the Royal Air Force in the UK, his transition to Imagery Intelligence, and his role on SA's Space program.
