President Trump's announcement of a renewed focus by U.S. military forces in Afghanistan on killing terrorists, with the intent of achieving lasting peace in the war-torn nation, showed an appreciation for the advice given to him by his generals on the ground. Gone will the days be of telegraphing operations and movements and in their place will be a military empowered by the needs and decisions based on the boots on the ground. The new path forward signals an appreciation for why the United States has been there in the first place. And it tells the people of Afghanistan, and the victims of terror for the last sixteen years, that the United States will not forget and will not give up.

During his Capitol Hill appointment hearing, President Trump's choice to lead the defense special operations warned that it won't be long until our terrorist adversaries will have access to and utilize drones of their own against us.

Recent intelligence reports suggesting an increased focus by the likes of ISIS to recruit and utilize young children for terrorist acts is troubling on several fronts. As we continue to fight this war for hearts and minds, it puts an even greater need to develop counter tactics to thwart indoctrination. It also presents further challenges for law enforcement sworn to protect the citizenry as it threatens to pit them against innocent children under the control of the world's most evil enemy.

With ISIS all but contained and defeated at their battlefield stronghold in Iraq, and on its heels in Syria, the ideology upon which the group was founded continues to grow and fester beyond the Middle East. Failure to do so will result in our new norm that resembles what those in areas like Iraq and Syria have grown accustomed.
