Where I've Been for the Last 2 Months | I Install New Windows in my Off Grid Log Cabin, Home Again!
After 6 weeks on the road exploring the sunny American south, I return to the cabin on the coldest day of the year. On the first warmer day, I take advantage of the winter thaw to replace the front windows on the cabin, from salvaged single pane wood fixed windows to new wood and double pane awning windows that will provide better insulation in the winter and more ventilation in the summer.
I talk about where I've been, show some footage of the American southwest and share some plans for upcoming projects.

15. Turning Passion into Business and Living Nomadically
When Dan and Candice's paths crossed at a yoga studio market, little did they know that their shared love for the earth would sprout into Live Edge, a beacon of sustainability in the world of woodworking. Their story, a tapestry of environmental stewardship and artistic craftsmanship, unfolds as they recount the growth of their business, from repurposing fallen trees into stunning furniture to strengthening the fabric of their community through local markets. Join us and be inspired by a couple who've turned their backs on city chaos for the tranquillity of rural life, proving that with passion and resilience, you can not only build a beautiful life but also make a positive impact on the planet.
Our conversation swerves from the warm glow of woodworking to the colder, more introspective side of life — embracing discomfort and the transformative nature of practices like cold plunging. The duo shares candid moments of failure and the rocky road to success, encouraging us to appreciate the sweetness of triumph against the backdrop of struggle. They also open up about their non-traditional approach to education and parenting, inviting us to question the status quo and consider the richness of experience over the conventional paths we've come to accept.
Peering into the future, Dan and Candice give us a glimpse of their Off-Grid Oasis, a dream in the making, where sustainable living isn't just an ideal but a tangible, year-round journey. With plans for a deck that doubles as a music space to the year-round growth of their gardens, the couple shares their vision for a life that's as close to nature's heartbeat as one can get. So pull up a chair and let the serenity of their story wash over you, as we explore the wild, wonderful world of Live Edge in this episode.

Buying Cheap Land - You Need Way Less (or More) Than You Think
Here's how I've been purchasing relatively cheap land since I was 17 years old. I have discovered that you need a lot more land and infrastructure than you think to raise livestock but you can also grow enough food for you and your family on a lot less acreage than you think if you focus on fruit, nuts and vegetables. What I didn't mention in this video is that I've witnessed, three times in the last decade, farmer friends selling off their herds because hay and grain was too expensive or not available due to drought in various parts of the country. Based on the snow we've received in the middle and mid eastern part of the continent so far this winter, 2024 is going to be another drought year with low production of hay, grain and maybe other food crops.
Thanks for Watching!
My mission on this channel is to help YOU and your family live your dream life so you can become more self reliant, happy, fulfilled and prepared for challenging times.
You can expect to hear more about the way I live, how I got into massive debt, how I got out of it, what drove me to live the outdoor lifestyle and how I'm more prepared than ever to weather the storms of 2024 and beyond. I answer your questions, I interview people who are living unconventional lives, I try to inspire and motivate you to pursue the life of your dreams, I give you the tips I used to live my dream life and I reflect on my own life - past, present and future.

14. Preparedness: Thriving in a World of Uncertainty, with Canadian Prepper
Prepare to have your perspective on preparedness reshaped as we sit down with Nate from Canadian Prepper, a voice of reason and guidance in the world of survivalism and self-reliance. Amid the chaos of a global pandemic, Nate's insights on the surge in demand for trustworthy information over basic survival skills and gear reviews underscore the complexities that content creators face, especially when navigating the realms of censorship and demonetization. His dedication to providing authentic analysis is a beacon for those seeking to understand and adapt to the uncertainty of our times.
Venturing further into the heart of readiness, our chat traverses the landscape of the Bugout Roll, Nate's invention catering to the organized prepper. Yet, it's not just about the gear; it's about the evolution from simple emergency bags to the grand vision of a self-sustainable homestead, a testament to the depth of the prepping community's journey. We confront the post-pandemic proliferation of exploitative companies, the stigma of prepping, and the indispensable role of community in forging a bulwark against burgeoning global threats like climate change and cyber warfare.
Rounding out our discussion, we tackle the societal vulnerabilities laid bare by the pandemic, emphasizing the necessity of preparedness for personal freedoms and societal resilience. Nate's perspective on the preparedness of the wealthy versus the resourcefulness of indigenous communities offers a profound take on global instability and technological advancements. Our exploration doesn't just inform—it empowers you to take ownership of your preparedness in a world where personal responsibility is the cornerstone of collective security. Join us for this profound episode that will leave you contemplating the role of preparedness in an unpredictable future.

Clearing Forest for New Buildings, The Chainsaws I Use and Preparing for Maple Sugar Season
An unseasonably warm and dry December allows me to clear massive beech trees to prepare for my next major building projects. I explain what chainsaws I use and I use a tractor to move a heavy maple syrup boiler into place. I explain why I'm building three more structures in this location and how I plan on keeping busy and productive when it's time to shelter in place.

Thirteen Years to Self Reliance | Freeing my Family from Authoritarianism
Taking the final steps in food security over the last three months has convinced me that the self reliance foundation I starting laying thirteen years ago has finally resulted in the freedom that I've been seeking since I was a teenager 40 long years ago. I believe that at least the next 7 years are going to be tough, with high inflation, diminishing freedom of speech, mobility and quality of life and decreased access to healthy foods, clean water, cheap energy and rural living.
In this video, I document my life in Canada from September to December, including hiking in the mountains, flyfishing, bowhunting of small and big game (moose and deer), growing and storing food, making lard and bone broth, fleshing hides, cutting and wrapping wild meat and many encounters with wildlife - bear, deer, moose, caribou, bighorn sheep, pika, chipmunks, grouse, turkeys and more.

Building an Off Grid Cold Cellar, Log Cabin Life, Cast Iron Cooking
I'm finishing the root cellar one section at at time - this week I install a floor in the breezeway section, move the freezer back into place and set up a metal rack to store mason jars full of preserved and dried food. On the new wood cookstove, I make moose and lasagna sandwiches with fresh homemade sourdough bread.

Meat Eater | Moose, Deer and Bear from the Wilderness, Bone Broth, Tallow in the Cold November Rain
Cold November rain, snow and mild sunny weather from one day to the next, but all suitable temperatures to butcher and wrap moose, bear and deer steaks and mincemeat and to render tallow and simmer bone broth on the wood cookstove in the outdoor kitchen. The challenges of harvesting, processing and storing meat at an off grid log cabin homestead are apparent this year and I talk about what plans on have to make next year's harvest season more efficient.

Installing a New Wood Cook Stove in my Off Grid Log Cabin
The wood stove I've been using for the past two years has functioned well as a source of heat, but it was less than ideal for cooking. This week, I remove it and install a LaNordica Rosa L cookstove, complete with an oven and removable rings for stove top cooking. To test out the oven, I bake a loaf of bread, which turned out perfectly in the easy to control oven where I kept the temperature at 450F for the full 45 minutes of baking time.
Check out my other channel to see the installation in a little more detail with explanations, and visit my Patreon channel to hear what's going on in my life the other 167 hours per week.

Growing, Harvesting and Storing a Year's Worth of Food in Cold Cellar Under a Log Cabin
Winter's coming and I've been focusing on harvesting, preserving and storing a year's supply of food in my cold storage under my log cabin, including a freezer full of meat and shelves full of root vegetables, squash, pickles, freeze dried meals and more. This week, I harvest the last of the garden, build a door for the cellar and build heavy shelves to store the pails of grains, corn, pasta, milk, rice, MREs and freeze dried vegetables and fruit.

Off Grid Log Cabin Life | Long Term Food Storage, Moose Hunting, Solar Power, Firewood, Archery
A busy autumn week focused on food, heat and power - harvesting vegetables from the garden and storing them in the cold cellar, installing solar panels for electricity, moose hunting for meat, cutting firewood and shingling the firewood shed, traditional archery practice for deer season, cooking with cast iron on the wood stove and keeping my dog Cali the golden retriever entertained.

Building a Root Cellar under my Log Cabin, Making Dinner for my Wife, Forest Garden Potato Harvest
With cold weather finally here, I prioritize harvesting the vegetable gardens, building shelves and installing lights and a fan in the root cellar under the cabin to store the vegetables and other food. On the wood stove, I light the first indoor fire of the season and cook my wife a beef stew.

Building Stairs into my Log Cabin from the Outdoor Kitchen, Installing a Pine Countertop and Sink
This week at the cabin, I build stairs into the breezeway and log cabin from the new outdoor kitchen and then glue pine boards together to make 12 feet of countertops. I install the first countertop and a double sink beside the wood cookstove and next to the water tote that will provide rainwater to the kitchen.

Mortise & Tenon Sawhorses at the Log Cabin, Is This Really Off Grid Living?
#woodworking #logcabin #offgrid
I finally spend some time building a set of sawhorses for the off grid log cabin using mortise and tenon joinery, a simple woodworking technique that is well suited to my rough carpentry skills and primitive life at the wilderness homestead.
I really didn't take me long since I had cut the red pine log in half almost a year ago and I cut the balsam fir legs last March, 2017. Cutting the tenons with a knife, axe and draw knife took very little time since I didn't need a precise fit and did not need it to look like finished furniture. I cut the mortises with a 1/1/4" auger, a simple hand tool traditionally used for drilling deep holes through wood in timber frame structures. Cali, my golden retriever, did slow me down a bit as she is constantly asking me to throw her training dummy for her to fetch, which she does with a lot of energy, eventually burning out and falling asleep at my feet despite the noise that I make with the woodworking tools.
The pair of sawhorses, which are about four feet long and thirty-four inches high (I'll cut the legs down a bit and even them out once the snow melts) came in very handy while I worked on the rest of the log cabin this week. I used them as a base to cut the pine logs to trim the west window, to cut short lengths of pine for floating shelves between the window and the woodstove and to plane smooth the flat side of the balsam fir logs splits, the wood that I'm using as the stringers for the staircase to the loft of the tiny house.
The weather this week is a little unusual - very sunny but cold, quite a bit colder than is typical for mid March. In fact, the sap in the sugar maple trees has not flowed since the day I tapped the trees and installed the spiles and buckets, more than two weeks ago. Judging by the forecast, sap won't start running for another week or so (maybe by the time this video is live). However, even though it's cold this week, February was a record year for warm temperatures, which really cut back the amount of firewood I burned this winter. In fact, I burned less than a cord of wood since early January, which means I have a good start on next year's wood.
