Listening to what they are saying, and more importantly, to what they are not saying. A lot of times, people only tell you things that benefit them. Hardly do they tell you things that hurt their credibility. So, listen to what they are not telling. Things that you would expect in a similar story. 2. Mirror the other person's emotions. The more you can relate to the other person the better your chances are that they will open up to you, which is what you want. Try to relate to them by showing empathy. Share a similar story. That way, they will understand that you understand them, however, don't try to make it about you. It's always about them.
