This cabinet was originally from the Kolga manor, Estonia. It´s style - neo-baroque, suggests that it is from the end of the 19th century. It´s condition shows that it has been la long time in the kitchen with lots of smoke and fume. I have restored dozens of Thonet chairs, but this time I wanted to do it differently.... Thonet chairs are most iconic chairs of all times. They started making them since 1850 and they are still made today. Their design is one of the best that has been ever invented. The chair is made out of beech that is steamed for 5 hours and then formed into metal molding. This method gives very durable structure. Rumor has it, that Thonet chair was allegedly thrown down from the Eiffel Tower to show how well made its structure is and it survived. When I got this cabinet, almost everything wanted to fall apart. In this video you will see, how I fix this Art Noveau cabinet. This piece was made around 1910-1930 period, in Estonia. It doesn´t have fancy details. Only the glass section hints, that this was made in Art Noveau period. Originally they had only clear coat, but my client wanted darker version, so I had to stain it. This nightstand is part of the bedroom set that I restored. It was made between 1930-1940, inspired by Art Noveau and National Romantism. In this video I´m restoring a vanity dresser and making a new knob for it! This style was very popular in Estonia between 1930-1950. In the beginning the furniture corners were very round and towards the 1950-s the corners became more square. So this piece is probably in the center of that era. They are very common in Estonia even now. People often throw away the mirror and use it as TV cabinet. This chair is made by Luterma, in the early 1900-s. It was mass produced and popular model. Now most of them have problems with plywood seat, but there are not many who can fix them. In this video, I will do that. I found that patent for similar chair was taken is USA as early as 1870, so this technology is pretty old. This was golden time for Soviet Union, when people dreamed about reaching the communism paradise and this mentality also reflects in the items from that period, which had more courageous design than in previous decades. This chair was made in occupied Soviet Estonia, in 50-s by freshly nationalized manufactory called Tallinna Vineeri ja Mööblikombinaat (former Luterma). This design was invented already in 1930-s, but because its good and sturdy design, the production lasted about 30 years. Its probably most produced chair model (with variations) in Estonia. Some years ago I restored this chair, but the client brought it back to me for repair, because his home builders accidentally broke the legs. This chair type was very common here in Estonia through 1920-1930. Its made of oak and the backrest is made of plywood and walnut veneer. Usually there is set of 6 chairs and a extendable table.
