Chickens aren't the most glamorous birds, but they have quite an interesting story, and that story begins in the dinosaur age. Curious? Here’s a primer on chicken evolution and domestication. The chicken’s origins lie in a group of dinosaurs called the theropods, which evolved into two categories some 230 million years ago. Eventually, one lineage resulted in the genetic line that produced the Tyrannosaurus rex. In 2003, paleontologist Jack Horner discovered a 68-million-year-old T. rex fossil in Montana. Inside its thigh bone, scientists found a blood vessel they were able to analyze. Their phylogenetic analysis revealed that genetically speaking, the domestic chicken is the closest living relative of T. rex. The modern chicken is descended from several of four known species of wild jungle fowl that inhabited parts of Southeast Asia about 50 million years ago. Scientists believe the red jungle fowl, Gallus gallus, is the most likely progenitor of the modern chicken, although research suggests that the domestic chicken’s yellow skin is a trait inherited from the gray jungle fowl. So, it’s more than likely that today’s chicken has multiple ancestors. Chickens became domesticated between 8,000 and 10,000 years ago. There’s also genetic evidence to suggest that there were simultaneous but independent domestication events in different parts of Asia and India. It’s difficult to pinpoint domesticated chickens' exact origins because the long history of interbreeding between wild and domesticated birds has resulted in inconclusive DNA evidence. Once egg-laying chickens were domesticated, they were used for food, fighting, and religious purposes. Various cultures spread them around the world over the course of thousands of years via migration, trade, and territorial conquests. The Polynesians brought chickens to the Pacific coast of South America around 1200 A.D. Over a period of several hundred years, and mostly due to the popularity of cockfighting, inhabitants of the New World became well versed in chicken care and breeding. Spanish explorers brought chickens to North America, and chickens soon became widely dispersed across the continent. The chicken is one of the most dominant symbols in our history dominating aspects of our culture and culinary habits. People will pay thousands of dollars for this exotic pet and some online trade encourages pet ownership. However, owning an otter as a pet is not as easy as it might seem.

Need some color in your life? Consider a pet peacock; that is, if you're up for the challenge. Peacocks are rightfully called peafowl. (Peacock is the name for the male of the species.) Because green peafowl are endangered, it is not recommended to keep them as pets. The blue peafowl generally makes the best pet, as it is more adaptable and less aggressive than other types. There are a few things you should know about general care before bringing your peafowl home, though 1. Have enough land. Peafowl require at least 80 square feet per bird. This space is important in order to prevent disease, as well as fighting among the birds. If you keep a male peacock, the pen should be large enough for him to display his long tail feathers without injury. Peafowl have a loud, shrill cry that can aggravate neighbors, especially during mating season, so peafowl are obviously best kept in rural areas. 2. Keep them warm. Wooden roosts are the best way to shield them from the cold. If you are raising peacock chicks from peafowl eggs, be sure to keep them in a heated area for four to six weeks after the baby peachicks start to hatch. You should keep the temperature over 95º F and lower it by about 5º F every week during the incubation period. 3. Keep them safe. Predators like coyotes are the main concern for peafowl owners, especially those that are free-range. Tree houses are the best way to protect them from predators, and peafowl love to roost up high. A large pen surrounded with chicken wire, with a wooden shelter or hen house with a nesting area, complete with a warming light, is a good example for a pet peacock habitat. 4. Feed them right. The National Bird of India needs fresh water and be fed two handfuls of mixed grain every day. This grain can be purchased at most feed stores, and most game bird feed, like pheasant feed, is also fine for half to two-thirds of these omnivore's diet. Also include mixed greens like cabbage or kale. 5. Pay attention to their health. Peafowl need to be dewormed every two months. Products like Piperazine or Ivermectin cattle wormer can do the trick. Since peafowl are not common pets or farm animals, there is no established vaccine schedule for them, but avian pox, blackhead disease, and coccidiosis is always a concern. Ask your vet on how to prevent and treat these. Other fun facts about peafowl? What about male peafowl, peahens and courtship displays? The eye movements of female peacocks during courtship were mainly concentrated on the male's legs and lower feathers. There are three species of peacocks: They are Pavo cristatus (Indian peacock), Pavo muticus (Java or green peacock), and Afropavo congensis (Congo peafowl). Breeding season occurs from spring into early summer, The peafowl dance honors many peacock species that originated in southeast Asia; it can be found at festivals across both India and Indonesia in places like Cambodia, Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Bangladesh, and more!

How well do you know your llamas from your alpacas? Llamas and alpacas are both in the camelid family hailing from South America. At first glance, they look very similar, causing many people to think they're snapping an alpaca selfie at Machu Picchu in Peru when it is in fact a llama deserving the photo bomb credit. These exotic herd animals have similarities. For one thing, both will spit on you. Llamas and alpacas are both bred for their wool and meat, sometimes even their milk. The camelid cousins do look similar in appearance, but noticeable differences exist. The behavior of each species is different, too. A good place to start with the difference between alpacas and llamas is with the ears. Llamas have long banana-shaped ears while alpacas have straight ears and they are smaller. Their faces are also a bit different with llamas having a longer face, while an alpaca's face looks smushed. The llama is on the left, and the alpaca on the right! Llamas are also bigger than alpacas, weighing up to 400 pounds. Average alpacas only get to about 175 pounds. For that reason, llamas are used more as pack-carrying animals on backcountry trips since they can carry heavier loads. Another difference between the two, is the fur. You may have heard about alpaca wool, which is much softer than a llama's double-layered, coarse outer coat over a softer inner coat. Alpaca fleece has finer fiber and more of it; it comes in 22 colors! There are two different breeds of alpaca used for wool: the Suri and the Huacaya. Alpacas also have a single coat and their hair is better for people who may be allergic to sheep wool guard hairs. Llamas are known to be good guard animals, while alpacas are a bit more skittish. In fact, some alpaca breeders have llamas in order to protect their alpaca herdmates. Llamas are also easier to train due to their steadfastness and independence. Llamas and alpacas can interbreed and have fertile offspring, but the babies won't be as strong as a true llama nor have as soft as fleece as a true alpaca. Other fun facts about alpacas? The belong to the camelidae (camel family) family of course! Alpaca fiber is much like sheep's wool! It is lacking in lanolin, which makes it hypoallergenic and also allows it to be processed without the need for high temperatures. The fiber is both flame-resistant and water-resistant Alpacas come in two types: Suri and the huacaya alpaca. The suri has fiber that grows long and forms silky dreadlocks. The huacaya alpaca has a wooly, dense, crimped fleece. During breeding, the male alpaca emits a unique throaty vocalization called "orgling." They hum! Alpacas are domesticated versions of vicugña pacos, South American ruminants that live high in the Andes. During National Alpaca Farm Days everyone can meet an Alpaca at a local farm! According to the Alpaca Owners Association, they don't eat much! A 125-lb. (57 kg) animal only eats around 2 lbs. (907 grams) per day (lightweights). This is typical bodyweight. If you plan to raise alpacas they must be raised in pairs as they can die from loneliness. So make sure your baby alpaca (cria) has a companion. Alpacas spit if they feel threatened. As they get older they will usually show more interest in vegetables. Here are some diet tips on Bearded Dragon care for anyone that lives with one! Bearded Dragons eat: Greens such as kale, arugula, mustard greens, collard greens, and endive. Squash of all kinds: Acorn squash, butternut squash, yellow squash, and spaghetti squash. Why is romaine or iceberg lettuce a problem? Both types of lettuce have an extremely high water content; while that isn't harmful to your bearded dragon, it means that those types of lettuce have little to no nutritional value. The high water content can also result in loose stools. Spinach, while very good for your bearded dragon, has the same effect. What about feeder insects you can give them occasionally? Superworms Earthworms Silkworms Mealworms Locusts Waxworms Dubia roaches Butterworms Sometimes it is hard to get a younger bearded dragon or a picky eater to eat their vegetables, it works best if you feed veggies with insects, because the insects will cause the beardie food to move which sometimes will pique their interest. You can also dust their veggies and insects with calcium powder to ensure they're getting the necessary vitamin D3. What about a basking area or terrarium for your beardie? A bearded dragon enclosure is the best way to go, because feeding your beardie roaches anywhere else other than a terrarium just doesn't sound like a good idea. Many people look for one that has plenty of space where each door can open separately. The bottom should also be waterproof! Beardies as a pet reptile would be our top choice for kids too. Once you research a bearded dragon diet, bearded dragon food won't seem so complicated. You can create a bearded dragon care sheet before you bring this popular pet home. Pet owners: Beware! Blue-green algae is literally killing dogs that ingest it after swimming in lakes. A few mouthfuls of the algae-contaminated water may result in fatal poisoning. There is no antidote for the toxins produced by blue-green algae, found in freshwater lakes, streams, ponds, saltwater, and brackish water ecosystems. According to public health officials, these toxic algae blooms happen when nutrient-rich water sits or only moves very slowly. Boiling, filtering, and purifying methods do not render toxic algae-filled water ever safe to drink. The blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, turn lakes a distinctive hue when conditions are right for the growth of algal blooms. In addition to producing a thick mat of green scum and an offensive smell, sometimes blue-green algae also produce microcystins, toxins that can be deadly to dogs, livestock and other animals within hours of contact. Caution tape should be added to any area with reported cases. What are the symptoms? Algae poisoning can cause great damage to the liver, kidney, and nervous system in humans who swallow affected water. It can cause severe vomiting, diarrhea, difficulty breathing, angry skin rashes, and other allergic reactions. Ingestion of toxic algae requires immediate medical attention. Researchers believed the dogs were exposed to the toxins: Inhalation - 13% Ingestion - 9% Skin contact plus ingestion (swimming, with swallowing water or licking fur) - 54% Unknown - 24% These toxic blooms are extremely dangerous and dog owners need to be aware of what they're dealing with when they see this pea soup. Most cities will cite when the water quality is an issue and these harmful water conditions are a problem for our dogs. As soon as the warm weather starts the department of health warns pet owners immediately. Let's be clear about the danger. There is NO antidote after those blue-green algae blooms are ingested by your dog. There are so many health risks when it comes to swimming in lakes even those that look like clean water. The negative health effects are endless. The cases reported are of dogs drinking water from the lakes and immediately showing these symptoms. Even if they lick their paws after direct contact with the scum is a big problem. Better to just stay away from lakes during those late summer months.

As far as home decor goes, it's better to look for a lamp that won't harm your animals! There must be a lamp other than the Himalayan pink salt lamp with health benefits and health claims that also help your overall well-being.
