This Veteran Is Spreading Patriotism Through American Flag Art

In October 2015, Brian Steorts created Flags of Valor, a veteran owned and operated business that creates wooden American flag artwork. Having all served in combat, Brian and his team (many of which were injured in combat although Brian had a non combat injury) are creating these flags with a different perspective on what it means to be American. Flags of Valor is spreading patriotism and American values with the work they do. They not only sell these flags, but they are donating them to the families of fallen heroes. "There's a lot of pride in what we're doing," says Travis Pennell, Operations Manager. Flags of Valor began when owner Brian wanted to purchase an American flag made out of wood. Once realizing he couldn't buy one that was made in the United States, he started making them himself and with the help of fellow combat veterans. "Art is very therapeutic so I wanted to hire combat veterans to create the art, so they can have an environment they can thrive in." says Brian. Philip Heck, Director of Special Projects says "The flag means a lot to me. Being able to put my heart and soul into making these flags with a team of people who the flag means just as much to is why I do this."

A Teacher's Passion For The Constitution Changes Her Students' Lives

For the past 6 years, Trumbull High School's We The People: The Citizen and the Constitution Program, under the leadership of Social Studies Teacher Katie Boland, has won the We The People state championship title. With more than 28 million students and 75,000 educators who have participated in the Program since its inception in 1987, that's a tremendous feat. To up the ante, Boland, as her students call her, a recent Teacher of the Year, is inspiring her kids to learn about the constitution and government to hopefully take home the national title this year. How does Katie Boland motivate her 24 students to learn about our country's constitution and freedom? Many say it's Ms.Boland's passion for the topic. She has a love for George Washington, the constitution, and all things government and her students play off of her. She has the ability to take her passion and share it with her students, which makes for success in the classroom, competitions, and in life. Every year Civics First and the Center for Civic Education put on state and national level competitions, where thousands of students compete by presenting and answering constitutional based questions. This year the nationals are being held in the National Conference Center in Washington DC from April 21st to April 24th. Last year the team ranked 8th in the nation and this year their goal is to take the gold! Good luck to Ms. Boland and her class!

They needed food, clothing, furniture, and other essentials that they couldn't afford. Judy stepped in and has been advocating for the field workers and their families ever since! She's been so influential in the field worker's lives that she has even helped a student pursue her dream of attending college. Did you know that new kittens need to be bottle fed every couple of hours? The problem is most shelters don't have the man-power to take care of all the kittens' needs! In order to solve this dilemma, the Pima Animal Care Center and Catalina Springs Memory Care Center are pairing up and both the kittens and the seniors are benefitting from it. The Pima Animal Care Center solely relies on the help of foster families to care for new kittens. So, when two kittens were abandoned at the Pima Animal Care Center, they needed some help.
