How to Adjust Prosthetic Sockets in Fusion 360 | Tutorial
After 5 months of using the Vario system, it looks like Sol needs a new #Prosthetic socket. This video is a How-to on digital socket adjustments and contains #Tips for #Autodesk #Fusion360 when modeling organic geometry. Sol compares two check sockets at the end.
Background: Sol recently began showing signs that his first Vario-socket needs replacing. After heavy play periods and especially after sports, Sol is left with a red mark from where his paw is rubbing against the socket. It's not painful but is something that cannot be left to worsen. When this starts to happen, Sol must wear a cotton sock over his paw whenever he uses his device. This protects the affected area and along with some ointment, keeps things moving for a couple of weeks. Sol doesn't like wearing cotton socks (which are just 0-6 month-old baby socks). He prefers the smooth surface of annealed rubber which creates a 'suction fit' allowing him to really throw the device around (for example when balancing or changing direction suddenly in football). The sock makes the arm feel loose and that won't do! It's now a race against time to get the new one fabricated. As we are moving into the UK summer, white, expanded rubber will be used this time. Voluntary Close | Body Powered Prosthetic Hand: Training Session
I am really impressed with how well my son is learning to use the hand I designed for him. Look at him go!
Sol tested this prototype in school last week and the training at home is coming along nicely. It's alien to him though. He's used to body-powered devices that work the opposite way (normally closed / voluntary open). Fast learner though - the apple didn't fall far from the tree ❤

Boy tries his hand at frisbee
Why do we prefer body power to bionic hands?
Because you can't throw a frisbee like this with a bionic hand!

Toddler's adorable reaction to new prosthetic arm
Sol (18 months) receiving a hydraulic arm created by his father. That reaction was worth the effort

Live life to the fullest
Another short family video set to soothing music. Filmed (once again) at our favorite beach on Anglesey, Wales, UK.
Sol (4) was wearing a body-powered cable system and a polyester socket which I designed and modelled from a 3D scan.
The hand is a split hook made from aluminum (from Steeper UK) which he can control using the cable system.
The orange part unclips allowing him to attach different hands to the prosthetic socket. Sol does have a prosthetist too but finds my devices more comfortable, lighter, and easier to use.

Sol's Tale
A few Rumblers have asked how Sol lost his arm. Here's a little video I put together showing what happened.
Warning: this film contains graphic images of amputation wounds
It's a horrific but beautiful couple of minutes that will take you on a journey for sure.

We will NEVER forget this moment
Going on stage in front of 4000 Microsoft delegates at the Aria Hotel, Las Vegas in 2018. We were treated REALLY well. When we flew out to Vegas, we were broke. Microsoft gave us £20,000 and hooked us up with their top delegates who knew what we needed to do to turn our luck around. The plan worked out pretty well.:)

Microsoft film about Ben and Sol
This film was made by Microsoft. They helped me train people at a college in the mountains of Ecuador (Riobamba) in 2018. Shortly after getting back from Latin America, the whole family was whisked off to Las Vegas and treated like royalty for a week
This is another one just for our fans - I have permission to use this video how I choose as long as it is not edited. If anyone wants to use it for educational purposes - give me a yell.

Ben Ryan, Portrait of an Inventor
A lovely film made by RS Components (UK) about how I started manufacturing prosthetic limbs for Sol and other kids like him
Born to Engineer
This film is about me and my eldest son, Sol in 2017 when he was just two. It was commissioned by the ERA and produced by DuckRabbit films.
You can see a hydraulic prototype in early development here. I sold the international patent to a prosthetics company in 2019 and the first commercially available model was sold to a little boy here in the UK in 2020. Sol and I have now moved on to 'more advanced' engineering solutions for him and others like him. We are still overambitious and have a lot to learn but sometimes its good to look back and see where you have come from.
I have permission to share and thought our followers would like it. Enjoy!

Kid Shows Off His Strength While Using Prosthetic Arm
Medical experts told this kid he would most likely never wear a prosthesis. Well, dad accepted the challenge and created this prosthetic arm with a 3D printer. Look how durable it is!

Never doubt your kids
For nearly a year, all of Sol’s school friends have been able to climb up the skateboard ramp in our local park but he couldn’t do it. It used to break my heart watching him struggle but fail each time.
I ‘knew’ it was something you can only do with two hands but never had the heart to tell him. I’m glad I kept my stupid mouth shut. because I was wrong. This week he did what needed to be done and found a way up, now there’s no stopping him. Look at him go. That’s my boy!

First day with an electric arm
It took a year to make and only just fitted him but look how easily this amazing young man can use an artificial arm. We went to every single training session (160 mile round trip) but now sol is an expert controlling electrodes. This opened a world of possibility for us both.
