In most cultures a skull whether it’s a human or animal skull isn’t seen as a good thing but in Balinese culture it’s seen as a form of new beginnings. Indigenous people of Bali never let any part of an animal to go to waste. The flesh would be eaten, the hide used for shelter and the bones used as tools. The skull though was kept as a sacred relic to placed where they could be seen and cherished. Bali’s indigenous people have always kept the skulls of animals as a reminder of how much that animal gave to them. Over time these skulls were used as a canvas for artistic expression. The cow in Balinese culture has a close representation of the concept of Mother Earth, for this reason it’s the primary skull you’ll see turned into an artistic carving.

The carved cow skulls found in Bali are all hand carved and sourced from found bones or ethical means. The cows’s skulls used for these carving must have lived a good, full life and was treated well. These skulls often come from cows that die of old age living in a pasture. Indonesian master carvers will spend two or three days tirelessly carving each skull, which is pretty impressive if you ask me, these carvers work fast. It takes a Indonesia carver over a decade to perfect this craft and are able to work at this speed. Each carving is unique as they are hand chiseled into the bone. Some sculptures leave the skull’s color in it’s natural state where others paint portions to change it’s look. They symmetry and craftsmanship on these skulls is simply mind boggling. There is no limit to the creativity that can go into one of these works the website skullbliss.com even allows you to submit a design that will be carved into the skull.

Are you amazing but the artistry that goes into these sculptures, would you want to hang one on the wall where you live, let us know in the comments down below.
